Excellent. Basically the same deal for Sekera as the Flames got Hamilton for.

Fair deal for a #3 defenseman who was a UFA. He will be asked to do more then that for us though of course. I like it.

Almost exactly the same as the Hamilton contract, I know which one I'd prefer.

Show me an example in his career where he has played on a top pairing and had success.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Sekera done to EDM. six years, $5.5M AAV and a no-move clause.

The problem with Sekera is he doesn't handle the big guys or physical play all that well. He's an Eastern Conference player. Will be interesting to see how he does in the west against the bigger and more physical teams.

Hamilton was a RFA and this is UFA. Can't really compare dollars there, apples and oranges.

What does he need an NMC for? Hes already in Edmonton!

Not a great contract but pretty much what you would expect given the slim pickings this year. In a few years, they will probably feel it. In the short term, it should work out.

How is their cap situation now though?

Always viewed Sekara has a good 2nd pairing guy. Ability to jump up and play 1st pairing in short stints but for the Oilers he will be forced into the top pairing all the time. If they make the term and cap work it's a win since it's a UFA signing but that's a big role he's going to have to fill.

Is he the guy who had 10+ goals and 40+ points for the Hurricanes or is his offence just 2-3 goals like in Buffalo all those years?

I agree that he essentially replaces Petry.

The Oilers had to do this, as they need NHL defensemen. But the bottom line for me is that, if Sekera is the best they've got on D, the Oilers still don't scare me in the slightest.

It'll be interested to see how Sekera performs playing top pairing minutes.

Considering he has over 29 points once and over 23 points twice in his career, I think he's probably the latter. He had 3 goals and 23 points in 73 games last year.

But you can in the sense that the two teams went out and acquired these guys in the last few days.

Yes, the Flames gave up some picks, but nonetheless, one team got substantially better, the other replaced Petry.

Hopefully Sekara transforms their defense as well as their prized signing from last year, Mark Fayne
