Small correction: Karri's Ramo extension is for $3.8M, not $3.9M.

Hiller has to be gone. Wasn't it made clear, publicly, that Ortio would have 1 of the 2 goaltending spots come game #1 of the 15/16 season?

I don't think Hiller is moving yet though. They'll likely wait to see how Ortio does at training camp, if he performs then they'll trade or waive Hiller otherwise same combo as last year.

I like it. I lso thought that Ramo got better as the season went on.
I am hoping that Ortio forces himself in. Then trade one of the starters for some other assets including an AHL stop gap to help Gilles out.

I don't mind Ramo...he is the same as Hiller in value to me...I just don't want this lead to the Flames losing Ortio down the road....I think he has the potential to be better than both of them.
Not sure what the plan is.
Not sure who would take Hiller at this point.

Nothing stopping Ramo or Hiller from going to AHL after training camp either.
Would very likely clear waivers.

You think the Flames will carry three goalies, which they've been quoted as saying they don't like doing?Because Ortio has to pass through waivers, and there's no way he makes it through.

That's too much money, for me, but with the Flames cap situation on a one year deal it doesn't matter.

This is a very confusing signing. For this year, we have two many goalies and I don't think we want to lose the Ortio asset by exposing him to waivers. Even worse, Gillies needs playing time but now Ortio is stuck in AHL.
Next year, we won't have any goalies with significant NHL experience. Darren Haynes convinced that we could use a NHL goalie with term for a few years until Gillies is ready. Something like Craig Anderson would have been ideal. A Talbot or Jones would have been good by me. Then unload Hiller at trade deadline. now, I just have no idea what we are doing.
For those saying we can trade Hiller, who is going to take a 4.5 M backup? Everyone has their starter needs addressed.

who knows ... it could depend on UFA season. Arizona for example has still a long way to get to the floor, even after acquiring Prongers contract. As of today, they are over 12m below the floor. Hiller on a one year deal might interest them.

I am quite fine with this.
Let the three fight for spots at camp.

Gives the Flames a little more time to assess what they have in Ortio and see how Gillies does. Treliving with another solid deal considering the need for goaltending and the lack of legitimate options. Honestly surprised that Ramo would be ok with such a conservative deal.
Might be that the offers aren't as great as Ramo would like and he'd rather try his luck at a familiar team with a real possibility of stealing and holding that #1 spot.

I'm not sure Ortio gets claimed. It seems to me most guys put on waivers go through - particularly at the start of the year.
That being said, still surprised. I suspect the Flames wanted to upgrade Ramo and couldn't and I suspect Ramo found the market for him luke-warm at best.
I think if the Flames find a dance partner Hiller still goes.

love it!! I like Hiller but sometimes I just feel uncomfortable watching him play. If he is on his game he can steal win for the Flames but if not you get scared everytime the opponent shoots the puck. I am not saying Ramo is perfect but I feel much better with him on the net. Besides I like that we have 1-2 goaltending last season. This season we'll have 1-2-3 and that would make the goalies to make sure they play better in order to stay playing. With Ramo signing at least Flames are very familiar with him.

we've heard Treliving quotes of late saying "Ortio will be in Calgary next year" correct? I'm sure I've seen them.
That's my only concern.
I've always wanted a Ramo/Ortio tandem but I certainly don't want to lose Ortio on waivers so I hope they tread carefully.
Still like the move Hiller and pay half of his salary and get say a 2nd instead of a 4th.

All I see this doing is giving Treliving and Hartley a little more time in camp to assess the Flames goalie situation in camp and the goalie market around the league over the summer and into camp. It just seems like deferring the ultimate decision to me.

nice move by BT! one year contract has really no major impact long term...
we will get something back for either Ramo or Hillier now rather than having Ramo walk away for nothing.
the deal buys them time imo...they can still make a trade prior to the opening day roster is set, so 3 goalies on July 1 doesn't mean 3 on opening night...

Excellent signing. One year term is an indication that Flames still believe in Ortio, but want an insurance plan. Odds are that Hiller will get traded at some point. Good Summer!
