I would be all for giving Gio his 9m for the first few years of the contract. But he'll need to realize that we need to drop his cap hit as the years go by.

The only part that worries me is that it has gone public. Heard an interview with Treliving and he sounded pissed about that. It might not bode well for a smooth negotiation

I'm okay with $9million up front, if it ends with the most cap circumventing contract possible under this CBA.

As of today he's still injured, and worth nothing to a competing team. Sure he is the heart and soul of the team but he's nothing more than a boat anchor salary wise when he is not playing.

No, no he's not. When Giordano stays healthy for a season and wins a Norris, then we can talk that figure. Giordano is no Subban. Giordano is no Weber or Suter. I don't even think Giordano is in the Doughty, Pietrangelo or Karlsson class. He's a $6-6.5M defenseman. You give him a small bump because of his leadership on the team, but you have to remain realistic. Giordano is one of the top 10 defenders in the game, but he isn't the top guy. He isn't worth that scratch now, and definitely not in the future.

That is a delusional statement to say Gio is worth nothing to a competing team - there is no reason to think he will be nothing but 100% healthy and ready to go when training camp opens.
Gio would be a coveted asset by many teams, but Treliving won't let that happen.

6yrs @ 7.5 AAV. Any more than that... and you need to trade him. He'd be 38 years old at the start of the final year of this contract.

Considering that both Brodie & Hamilton make a combined 10.4 million, 8 million will be a lot for the 33 year old Giordano

If true,
ok. It's been nice Mark.
Open up the trade market for him.

I don't think he's saying he's worth nothing but Gio is not worth the price of a true elite d-men around the league. If you look at Gio's stats for the last 8 82-game seasons that he's played with the Flames, he's only completed 2 full 82-games with the majority of them less than half played and he's injury prone. Not much good to pay a guy sitting in the press box learning to be a GM or a coach one day. Sure let's hope he's 100% coming training camp, but as the season goes on, the last thing you'd want is to have another injury.
Maybe it's time to trade him to an eastern team on a high and move forward on rebuild now that the Flames still have Dougie Hamilton and Brodie. It's not like Gio is under 30 at the moment.

Heard BT yesterday on the fan, and when asked about the UFA/RFAs that "you HAVE to take emotion out of it"
Seemed a bit weird when he stressed the point again and again.
But maybe if he's talking about say Gio and his contract, that that statement maybe gives you an idea of where his heads at. Sounds like if the dollars and cents don't work for the long vision/plan, then without emotion he'll do the business move and seek other options like moving him.
At least that's what I get from his comments.

The past 2 seasons, he's been a top 5 defender IMO. and Before he got injured this year he was the run away favourite for the Norris. The amount players are getting has been steadily rising for the last few years, he's definitely at least a 7.5M defender. Especially when all the years you're buying are UFA ones.

Love what Gio brings to the table. He's not worth 9 million tho. Let's see the guy play a full season first. This is the kind of contract that handcuffs a team. If he was 3-4 years younger, you consider it. Bye bye Gio.

Of course the player should start with a high ask but that is just ridiculous. He might as well have asked for eleventy billion.
A lesson needs to be learned with the Chara contract, he was worth it at the time but that contract has crippled that team today.

Agree on something fair that works for both sides and sets the team up for success long term or explore the trade market. Gio is a solid addition to our back end but I also feel confident we would be fine without him and the additional assets would hopefully make up for his loss. Don't want to see long term with a high cap hit.

The acquisition of Hamilton has greatly diminished Gio's position in contract negotiations. The Flames can now ice a legit top-pairing of Brodie-Hamilton for the long-term. So Gio's contract demands are gonna need to come back down to earth if he's going to remain a Flame. If he wants $9M, he's looking at a three year deal. If he wants term, he's gonna need to get comfortable with a much lower number. I think most Flames fans want to keep Gio, but in light of the Hamilton trade, I think most would not be not be too upset if he was moved for a sizable return.

This is ####ing laughable. He is not worth that at all. Guy has two good seasons and demands 9mil for the rest of his career. I don't care if he is the captain of this team don't want that ####ing contract near the flames. Rather trade him. Or sign him for what he's worth which is around 6-7 for next 3 years. That's it.

There's a HUGE difference between an ask and a demand. He did not demand $9mil. He asked. He won't get it.
