Lost in all this Schlemko talk is the assumption that Smid will not play ever again. At the moment we don't know that for sure.

Food for thought.

Didn't Treliving say he'd be ready for training camp?

Based on what?

What suggests to you he's NOT a legit #5dman? ...Considering every time he got bumped up to the #4 spot beside Brodie the team got better, every minute he played on the #5 spot beside Diaz the team got better, he played legitimate minutes in the playoffs while Hartley cycled Wotherspoon and Potter nervously in the #6 spot until Diaz' return, and Brad Treliving our general manager insisted in every interview that Schlemko was capable of playing more minutes and taking the load off the other guys.

Schlemko's a steady defenseman. He doesn't produce much offensively so he should be cheap. Yet unlike all other "#5s" last season, he can actually drive possession unlike Smid/Engelland and doesn't make a turnover in the corners every time unlike Diaz. That's exactly what you want for a #5. Sure, it'd be nice to have a guy like Wideman as your #5 but dollar for dollar value is an important consideration.

I think it's more the assumption that Smid will probably be on the IR list during training camp and the early parts of the season, which will also help balance out the Dcore so that we don't have to put anyone on waivers early on. Even if Smid returns, it'll probably be during the season.

Whatever happens though, I hope the pairings are either Smid-Wideman or Engelland-Schlemko or Schlemko-Smid or Schlemko-Wideman. If our bottom pairing is ever Smid-Engelland ever again, it's gonna be rough.

He's expected to be ready and I would be surprised if he wasn't. I would think it would be tough to keep him off the ice.

Others have said it, but I would be not be sad if we got a Jay Beagle and/or Chris Stewart...

Hey, what about Eric Fehr?

I don't mind the idea of signing Schlemko to a one year contract to compete with Wotherspoon for the 7th defence spot. I like him better than Diaz and he'd be good insurance but the top six defence positions are already spoken for.

Hey, what about Eric Fehr?
Yeah a player like Stewart could be useful for us but we're pretty clogged already for forward positions.
We'd probably need to move someone else out.

Schlemko was picked off of waivers as a depth move.

Are you saying he's only behind 1) gio, 2) Brodie, 3) Hamilton, 4) Russell? And ahead 6) Wideman and 7) Engelland and 8) Smid (if he plays again)?

He played minutes as a five because Hartley had no other choice because of all the injuries

Arizona waived him to make room for their prized first round bust Gormley. The same team that threw out Keith Yandle and Devin Dubnyk this season as part of their tank job. Dallas really didn't even make an effort to try him.

Schlemko being on waivers really has no bearing on how effective he is as a #5 defenseman.

I'm not saying he's ahead of Wideman.

Funny you mention Russell though, he was on waivers at the end of 2013 and didn't even get claimed. His game didn't really change in the time between between being on waivers and being traded for.

"All the other injuries" came before he ever joined the team. You're discrediting him for something that was out of his power.

The only thing within his power was his play on the ice, and his play on the ice was strong.

I've got a question for you CBA experts here (looking at you Sureloss). Discussions for UFAs started on the 25th so that they can sign on July 1. Does this discussion period apply to players with RFA status and eligible for an offer sheet, ala Dougie Hamilton?

If I recall correctly, Treliving was not allowed to speak with Hamilton prior to the trade. Would that have been because that was before the 25th or because Hamilton is not allowed to speak to teams prior to July 1?

RFA's of initerest to me,

Craig Smith NSH
Stanislav Galiev WSH
Jimmy Hayes FLA
Jakub Silfverberg ANA (Did they really go get Haglin to replace him?)
Linden Vey VAN
Calle Jankrok NSH
Teemu Pulkkinen DET
Jesper Fast NYR

Having made this list. I'm pretty sure that 100% of them all sing with their respective teams. But in the event that one of them becomes available? I hope they can nab of these players.

Also, whats with Scott Glennie? Can he be a reclamaition project? Or have his injuries taken to heavy a toll?

Burke quote in TSN clip on Dougie Hamilton trade "don't congratulate me - Brad Treliving did this trade"

"with the D-set and the centre position for a while - we are probably looking to get a little bigger, more hostile on the wing"

To me this is a pretty big red flag that they're going to make Chris Stewart a priority on July 1. But that could just be tinfoil hat talk.

If Burke has his way. Chris Stewart or Jimmy Hayes would be prime candidates.

Really dislike the idea of Chris Stewart though. But id anyone can get the most out of him, it's Hartley and the Flames staff.

Jimmy Hayes, well he'd be a perfect fit if they could somehow pry him out of Dale Tallons hands.

And Frolik is still a prefered target too. 5m a year may be too much if the term is longer than 3 years.

If they go after Stewart, I trust them and their judgement. They've done an amazing job so far and I think they'll only get better.

I believe I've read that for RFAs, only the team holding the player's rights can negotiate with them prior to July 1. The discussion period from June 25 to July 1 only applies to UFAs.

EDIT: And I was wrong. The interview period applies to both RFAs and UFAs. At least as of last year, and presumably that means going forward under the current CBA as well.

Quote:
In the June 18 memo (read over the phone to me by an agent), the league states, “After discussions with a number of general managers, we have revised and hopefully clarified with regard to last summer the permissible parameters of player contract and communication during the applicable interview periods.

“Please be advised that clubs are permitted to discuss the potential interest in as well as general parameters of a potential future contractual relationship with another club’s pending RFA or UFA during the applicable interview periods. The clubs may not enter any agreements or make any binding offers, promises, … oral or written concerning the terms of a potential SPC (standard players contract) with another club’s pending RFA or UFA.”

So in other words, teams and agents can now discuss the general parameters of a deal, as in, “I’ll be looking for a seven-year deal at around $5 million annually,” etc., meaning now players and agents at least know where each other is at heading into July 1 and know who’s in the game and who isn’t.

I love that every time you hear a Flames management member interviewed about the trade, they give credit to Sweeney for being a tough negotiator, and that although we are pumped to have Hamilton, we hated giving up those picks in a deep draft.

I am totally on board giving Stewart a go, because like you said, if anyone can get him more consistently motivated, it's Hartley and his team. And a motivated Chris Stewart is exactly what this team needs.

I do understand the trepidation some have about him signing here though. It certainly wouldn't be without risk, that's for sure.

Jimmy Hayes....would love it, but I can't see Talon parting with him though. They are building a big team down there in FLA.....but then again, no one thought Hamilton could be moved either.

I'd love Jimmy Hayes. 6'6, right handed shot, 20-20 type of guy. Would need to either OS or trade for him though.
