I don't think Chiarelli could draft for those picks. His lists were prepared by his he clearly didn't trust and has nothing to go on here. Why roll the dice on complete unknown commodity? Better to roll the dice on players you know and like

I thought the draft was a disaster for them outside of acquiring McDavid. Talbot was alright I guess, but it won't matter if they don't get 2-3 legit top 4 Dmen. He'll look like Scrivens and leave as a UFA unless Chiarelli can pull off a minor miracle before the season starts. He needs to reel in a couple big name guys from UFA and make an uncomfortable trade (2016 1st, Nurse, Drysaddle, etc) to fix those holes. I wouldn't be optimistic if I was an Oiler fan. There's no reason to expect they will be any better than a bottom 5/10 team next year with what we've seen so far.

It's funny the Oilers paid a 2nd to get him and he couldn't bring any of that valuable draft intel from his previous employers. Oh yeah, never mind, the staff he helped assemble showed their true colors with their hilarious choices at 13/14/15 .

You make it sound like the Oilers didn't know anything about any of the players in the draft that weren't on the cover of the hockey news...which sounds about 100% correct.

Agreed. I don't understand how people believe these moves edmonton made are any different than the moves MacT made last season. Got an unproven goalie with good stats on good defensive team (scrivens), Got stay at home D men who everyone thought filled defensive hole (Fayne, Ference) Got size upfront (Pouliot, Purcell). Aquiring these mediocre guys to fill your gaping holes doesn't fix anything.

Problem with this assessment is the Oilers traded Marincin for the pick and then flipped the pick for Gryba. So they really traded Marincin for Gryba which makes 0 sense to me as Marincin is an RFA and Gryba is a UFA next summer. Marincin is better and more than likely makes less money over the next 3 years.

Other than getting Mcdavid I thought the oilers had a terrible day. Talbot and Gyrba came at a price(if you factor in it was Marincin for Gryba not a 4th) and 2nd and 3rd for Talbot. Both are UFA's and I think Chiraelli might find out that he isn't the GM in Boston and UFA's won't be doing him any favours in Edmonton. He also may find out that neither are worth an offer by mid season as guys like Nikitin and Ference and Fayne and Fasth and Scrivens have all come to Edmonton and asked to play much bigger roles than they are capable of and have failed. By next year he may have traded Marincin a 2nd and 3rd for nothing

I also don't like the Reinhart trade. Not as bad as the other 2 trades but Reinhart's value has slipped badly but he still comes with the high end bonuses with his contract. He could still earn almost 3.5 mil over the next 2 years and might not produce anywhere near that

I don't think the Talbot trade is a bad one! They didn't give up much to get him. Actually think they got a pretty good price to be honest! Then again Talbot to me has proved nothing. That's neither good or bad.

What I do know is God could be in net for the Oilers and he would still let at least 3 in a night. Jesus would let in 4, Noah 5, Allah 3.5, Buda? Buda wont play hockey, especially for the Oilers.

Gryba is the Oilers version of Engelland. If he plays on the bottom pairing it is not a bad move. Team cant have pure goons anymore.

Griffin Reinhardt? Based off Isle fans Oilers made a mistake here. Will be a decent 2nd line dman. So glad we got Hamilton, thanks Oilers for threatening the use of an offer sheet. Oilers probably could have traded for him if it wasn't for this!

Reinhart couldn't play 2nd in the AHL last year. Don't see him doing it in the NHL. Too slow. Zero offense too

I have no issues with this lol! Oilers paid a big price for him. Think they would of done much better drafting Roy and Carlo than making this trade. Honestly I see Carlo alone as an upgrade on Griffin.

Outside of McDavid the Oilers didn't draft to be honest. They tried to get players to play today. Mistake in my mind. Yet the Oilers love to rush prospects and destroy them. I see McDavid getting 80 points this year, and being a minus 20.

I'm giddy, the Flames have a top four d pairing that is awesome and you can switch names on who the top four are. The Oilers have 6 dmen, all at this point should be on the bottom pairing. Hard pressed to find a second line dman in that group. I do like Nurse though!

Actually I think the oil did right in getting Reinhart, obviously after failing on Hamilton.

The problem for the oil is that their D will not develop in time to support their forwards before they are gone from the team.

The Flames were in danger of this too. In 2-3 years, the Flames may have had a declining Gio, a prime Brodie, an apex, or past Russell, no Wideman. Probably a struggling Wotherspoon. On the 2nd pair. At the same time, the Flames forwards would have been hitting their prime.

The oilers missed the boat not being able to get Hamilton. They did the next best thing to get Reinhart.

They best put together a package for seabrook now!

reinhart is not the consolation prize to Hamilton. That would infer he is a prize worth getting. Bob Mackenzie was even saying that Reinhart does really project to more then a 3rd pairing dman now.

It's only been 3 years since being drafted, but he's done absolutely nothing since then to make me think he'll be more than a 3rd pairing D

I know Sam is highly touted but at this point I wouldn't be surprised if none of the Reinharts live up to the hype (Max wasn't hyped but at one point he looked like he could be an NHLer).
