The beauty of it, if true, is that it served a double purpose. First, it drove up the market price for Talbot. Second, it fooled everybody about what Treliving was going to do with his second-round picks, which, as we now know, he was dangling before Sweeney to get Hamilton.
I imagine Treliving genuinely did make an offer for Talbot, though, knowing that Sather was bound to keep working the market until the last minute. Which means he was using the Rangers as a smokescreen. Excellent work.
