This is what the flexibility of having those 6 picks in the first three rounds allowed Treliving to do. Bravo sir! Well played in turning Baertschi and Glencross into those picks in a strong draft and well played to turning all the picks into exactly what we needed (big, RH, top pairing young dman). We shortcut 4 years of development. Huge trade.
Incredible.

Hamilton was Boston's top possession defenceman last year. Corsi was higher than any member of the #Flames. An area of need in Calgary.
And of course, the trade gives Flames team president Brian Burke a chance to hop in the DeLorean and correct a “mistake” from his past: Dealing away the picks that became Hamilton and Tyler Seguin to the Boston Bruins for Phil Kessel in 2009.

Would the Flames have been able to talk to Hamilton's agent prior to this trade? Could they have a deal agreed in principle with the Agent without having direct contact with the player?

According to John Shannon, Flames were NOT given permission to talk to Hamilton or his agent prior to trade.
I still can't believe this. A big right-handed 22 year old defenseman with great possession stats ... in addition to T.J. freakin Brodie, and Treliving didn't have to move any core players. Just ... wow
If the mentioned 5.5m asking price is correct, then 7 or 8 years should be a no brainer.
