Yup - I would much rather overpay Dubnyk as a UFA than give up 2 2nds for Talbot.
Dubnyk is far more proven as well.
If it was the Flames (which I doubt) I would imagine that it was the 52nd and 53rd picks. And if so, while I wouldn't be happy about it, the fact is that if you could get a Talbot out of those two picks, you have done well.

Back when the Flames got Kiprusoff the UFA age was set at 31 although about to change. So you could better justify giving up a 2nd round pick from a 9 round draft on a 27 year old goaltender. Now....that's a lot tougher to do.
|
Let's not forget history though. Kiprussoff was a 3rd stringer when he got traded. He also had played only 47 NHL games when he got traded.
Quote:
The Background
Throughout most of his career in San Jose, Miikka Kiprusoff lurked in the shadow of Evgeni Nabokov in the Sharks’ crease. During his tenure, the Finnish netminder never started more than 22 games in teal in a single season and held inconsistent numbers over the course of his three years with the club. After posting a .915 save percentage in the 2001-2002 campaign, he challenged his Russian counterpart for the starting role the following season. Unfortunately, his numbers were atrocious. In 22 games, Kiprusoff recorded a 5-14-0 record, an .879 save percentage, and a 3.25 goals against average. Not only did he lose his chance to become the number one goaltender in San Jose, but he was also eventually beat out by Vesa Toskala for the backup role. There didn’t seem to be a job available for Kipper in a Sharks’ uniform. San Jose traded him to the Calgary Flames in November of 2003–following an injury to their starting netminder– in exchange for a second round pick in the 2005 draft: Marc-Edouard Vlasic.
|
Kiprussoff's numbers were worse on a decent team in San Jose before coming to Calgary, then Rato Berra here in year 1 of the rebuild. And Rato Berra still got a 2nd round as value (highly overvalued, but still got it).
Meanwhile, in 57 NHL games, Talbot has a save percentage of .931.
Cory Schneider, who posted a save percentage of .927 the year he got traded went for the 9th overall pick. He had played about 80 games before he was traded. As good as Horvat is progressing, the Devils still win that deal right now. Being behind Lundqvist is the main reason why Talbot is not a starter.
Talbot is certainly worth 2 2nd round picks.

Friedman says once the Talbot deal is done the logjam will clear for the other goalies.
Rangers want to get the deal done today or tomorrow, but not guaranteed it will happen.

Murray said teams are looking more at Lehner than Anderson because the price, both salary and what he's asking in return, is cheaper

NYR continue to mull over multiple offers for Cam Talbot. Keeping him remains an option, but strong interest makes that unlikely. #TSN
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Don't expect anything will happen with Talbot before glen Sather heads to Florida tomorrow and meets with his staff to discuss all options.

I know this has only happened twice, where Murray has basically said he isn't going to get a good deal, but its starting to paint a picture.

Pretty sure that it's just public posturing to get a better deal. He'll get what he wants for Lehner. Just playing the media against the offers he's receiving.

The Rangers are continuing in their quest to acquire a first-rounder in exchange for Cam Talbot, with bidding on the club’s backup goaltender expected to last into Friday, The Post has learned.
Sources report general manager Glen Sather has granted interested parties permission to speak with Talbot’s agent, George Bazos, to gauge the netminder’s interest in their respective cities. Talbot is one way year away from free agency, operating under a $1.45 million contract that cannot be extended until January under CBA regulations.
The Sabres, Oilers, Sharks, Stars and Flames are in the mix for Talbot, for whom the Blueshirts have received offers of, according to one informant, “multiple second-rounders and a high second-rounder plus a pretty good prospect.”
The Entry Draft commences with Round 1 here on Friday night before concluding with Rounds 2-7 on Saturday. Edmonton owns the first, 16th, 33rd and 57th picks; Buffalo the second, 21st, 31st and 51st; Calgary the 15th, 45th, 52nd and 53rd; and San Jose the ninth and 39th selections within the first two rounds.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
One note about Cam Talbot: the teams given permission to talk to him were not given permission to talk salary. They could discuss...

fit on the roster and in the city. No surprises among the teams (BUF, CAL, DAL, EDM, SJ) with FLA appearing to look elsewhere.

I would not be happy if the Flames dealt 52 + 53 for him. I'd much rather they go and sign Dubnyk for a 5X5 than waste the picks.

Especially on the even of the draft, I'd be pretty damn furious.

If Talbot was Lehner's age then it would be worth considering, but the fact is he is only one year younger than Ramo, and really hasn't established himself as a true starter at this level yet. Trading two second round picks for him would be absolutely silly all things considered.

We have perfectly capable goaltenders on the team and in our system right now. Makes so little sense.

When did Talbot turn into Ken Dryden?
I hope Treliving doesn't lose his mind on this one. Keep the picks and either sign Dubnyk or go with Hiller/Ortio next season. Don't get stupid.

If we are to trade for Talbot. Do we intend on trading Hiller too? and then running with Ortio - Talbot?
If that is the case, we damn well better get a better return for hiller than what we give up for Talbot.

Talbot is better than Hiller.
I won't be happy with spending two 2nd round picks on a goalie. Would way sooner sign Dubnyk, but if we end up spending good assets on Talbot, I'll give Treliving the benefit of the doubt and hope he turns into a high end #1.
