PITT targeting Phil Kessel as one of 4 or 5 scoring forwards that interest them. Everybody wants young Penguin D.

I'm curious if a player like Frolik is on the Flames radar.

I think so, Buffalo makes the most sense because the Rangers likely dont want to move Talbot to them, and the other teams in the West that are looking for goalies are in the pacific and Canucks dont want to move to them
seems a good fit

Lack does not get you #31 overall.

I would say #51 and an add on are more likely for Lack.

With Dubnyk and Ramo as UFA's, I don't know why teams are even offering a 2nd for Talbot, Lack and Lehner.
Dubnyk has accomplished more than any of them and Ramo is on par with Lack and done more than Lehner at the NHL level.
I really hope the Flames do not move any of their picks for these guys. I'm fine with Hiller/Ortio and I also prefer Dubnyk up to $5.5 million per year for 3 years.
Flames need to restock their cupboards and you do that by making all your picks.

I would say the reason you make a trade instead of sign one if the UFAs is you don't have to tie up 4-5 million on a goalie, you can put that money towards another area of the team.
Also with a trade you're not tied to anyone long term. Could you imagine signing Dubnyk to a 5 year 30 million deal then having him crap the bed?
On the other hand, you might give up a second for Talbot and maybe he craps the bed too and walks...well that sucks, but at least we don't have a 5 mill cap for 5 more years.

For most teams I agree but the Sabres have had a lot of 1st round picks over the past few seasons and can probably afford to give up the 31st pick to solidify a position of need. Lack is ideally a 1B or backup but he's better than what they have right now.

But even if we accept for a moment that the Sabres would be willing to give up the #31 pick, is Lack the guy they target?
I would think they could have any of the available goalies for that pick. And I wouldn't take Lack before Talbot. Or Lehner.
Tough call. I wouldn't give up the #31 for any of them.

we should offer Hiller and retain salary for 31....we'd probably have to add though.

Hanowski! I jest, Reinhart. Still, Hiller gets you #31 easy. He's the best goalie out of the bunch being talked about.

...The question is....Are there any thoughts in the organization that Ortio could be the starter? Or is he seen as the long term backup?
|
I like Ortio a lot. I think he has a lot of upside to him, but I think it might be risky to run with him as our starter. I would be fine with a tandem of Hiller/Ortio. I'm not for trading picks to acquire Lehner or someone like that when we could just as easily roll with Hiller/Ortio. Or if Hiller is going to be traded, get an extra pick for him and then sign Dubnyk and go with Dubnyk/Ortio. Then in a few years Gillies should be ready.

Available goaltenders....
Thru Trade:
- Lehner/Anderson
- Lack
- Talbot
- Jones
- Hiller (I'm speculating)
Thru UFA:
- Ramo
- Dubnyk
- Niemi
- Fasth
- Neuvirth
- Enroth
- Lindback
I just don't see why any team gives up significant value for one of the goaltenders available thru trade.

#Canucks have inquired about Lucic. Probably 25 other teams have, too. Bruins could ransom him or keep Lucic despite Cap crunch.

The only way they get that is from a team who has 2 picks in the first round. Buffalo, Arizona, Edmonton?

So if the Oilers move towards Anderson and Buffalo towards Lack, who the hell would offer a 1st for Talbot?
How does New York get that kind of leverage?

I think if it works out that way, the rangers are going to kick themselves for not taking the previous offers.

Providing they actually received those offers. You can't believe anything you hear this week as it's all posturing and smoke screens. Sather has been working hard all week trying to generate a market for a backup goaltender. Time will tell if it works or if he has to settle for what teams are actually willing to pay for an unproven backup goaltender.
