Default Washington Sens Dubnyk Packing

The Washington Capitals have traded Devan Dubnyk.

We had received quite a few offers on Dubnyk, and had extended many feelers out there as well to gauge interest if we included other pieces. In the end, it came down to 2 teams. One offered an immediate impact player. One of the best forwards in the league. It was tough not to take, but we needed to do something for our future and we circled back to take one of the first offers we received.

Washington is very please to welcome the arrival of Riley Sheahan and Dimitri Kulikov to the Capitals organization.

To Ottawa:
Devan Dubnyk

To Wahsington:
Sheahan
Kulikov
2016 2nd (Phi)

Trading Dubnyk was tough (even tougher to trade him within the Eastern Conference) but we believe that, similar to Varlamov, Dubnyk will come back down to Earth and his rating will too. We believe we sold high, and are ok with that. Regardless or whether he does great or not, we still have 82ov Elliott and 78ov Darling, plus a 71ov Forsberg in the system. Dubnyk was expendable.

Drafted 14th overall in 2009, Dimitr Kulikov immediately jumps into our top D pairing, along side Goligoski.
With Daley, de Haan, Sustr, and the surprise ratings jump of Weber, we are comfortable with the back end, and feel the defensive future is exciting.

Pro insider tip of the day: I'm a sucker for Red Wing prospects, and liked Sheahan a lot. We know that his NHL career will have him stuck on the 3rd line for a couple more years, but also know that the 22 year old, 21st overall pick from 2010 has a very bright future.

Thanks to Flickered Flame for the back and forth chats.
Thanks to everyone else I harassed with proposals as well.

Stay tuned for the Capitals season preview, coming soon.

Without knowing what the other deal was, it feels like you could have received a bit more out of Dubnyk...so I think I like this a bit more for the Sens. Not a ton more, but a bit more.

You are right though in that Dubnyk could very well come back to earth. And you have two solid young guys...especially Kulikov who is good #2/3 dman.

Great job moving him...big deals take time so well done to both sides.

Tough deal to make because I really like Sheahan. Kulikov is young and finally had a good NHL season but I am not sold on him yet. Bottom line is I needed to upgrade on Hiller, who has now been traded.

The trade talks actually started long before re-rates came in and was a better deal for me back then so I was just a tad hesitant to make the deal now but it was my initial offer a few weeks back so I stayed with my word and made the deal.

I also like Sheahan and Kulikov, and it's hard to know how Dubnyk will play this year after actually looking like an NHL goalie finally last season.

cool trade

Seems like goalie values have taken a step back this off-season. So the reality is that we can all say "wow could have got more" but if everyone is getting a lower perceived priced - that is the new price the market is giving.

I think its a good deal when you look at some of the other goalie trades. Two young players and a 2nd rounder is a pretty good return for a guy who just a year ago would've cleared waivers without a second look!

I do realise that he was a Vezina nominee this year, but I think this season is an outlier until he does it again.

Great deal, Dubnyk hasn't proved that he can play at that pace for a full season.

Don't think goalie values has changed or dropped in this league, just that there's is and has been a huge goalie change over... goalies are coming out of nowhere and putting up very solid numbers and thus watering down the pool a wee bit. The problem is that most of them will find they way out of the league just as fast..

Goalies like Price and such their values haven't dropped but the pool of goalies that are top tier (consistent and without doubt) is a lot smaller

Really like the deal for the caps as I am not sure that Dubnyk can keep up his pace from last season and he may even end up on a weak squad.
