I don't think anyone listening to the podcast could really think that his use of the word was flippant. America needs to look its racism in the face and accept it's there. Canada needs to do the same with its racism towards natives. Ignoring it and letting it fester does nothing.

I took a bus ride from Dallas to Nashville last year.
There were a group of young African Americans sitting in the back, and every second word out of their mouth seemed to be ######. ###### this, ###### that, look at that ###### (referring to a white man).
It was honestly uncomfortable to hear it, but they were using it like Canadians use 'eh'.
These days as it seems to have lost all negative meaning in mainstream Merica.
There was a great comment made on Larry Wilmore's show last night re: Obama using the word on that podcast.
There's a difference between saying the word and using the word.
Obama said the word, in the context of expressing how far race relations have to go in this country. There's a difference between that and someone using the word as an insult, with hatred fueling it.
I feel like Obama has probably had that word hurled at him plenty of times in his presidency thus far.

It was a good segment. And I must say, Wilmore seems to be starting to hit his stride. Several good shows the last few weeks. I don't think he'll ever be as reliable as Colbert or Stewart but he's much better than he was.

Agreed. Part of it is that his show is a bit of a different format than TDS/TCR, so it took some time to work the kinks out.
It's unfortunate that it's happened, but the current wave of perceived or blatant racism in the US has actually been good for his show. He can approach those topics in a way that Jon Stewart cannot, based solely on his own experience as a black man. He did a segment where he sat down to a meal with several gang members in Baltimore in the wake of the riots there, and it was really pretty interesting, and something that Jon Stewart would never be able to do.
Of course Don Lemon is gay, looked at how well groomed he is. They're a very clean people. And they have been ever since they came to this country from France.

That's true. With the NAACP leader scandal, the Baltimore riots and now this he has really hit it out of the park. You start to realize why CC decided on him when at the beginning it really wasn't obvious (to me he was the worst of the Daily Show "correspondents"). This stuff is right in his wheelhouse and it isn't going to go away anytime soon.
I'm not asking if the word is offensive to people or not. That's on each person, individually, to make that choice.
What I'm asking is: is it OK to us the word, depending on the context of the conversation? Is it OK to use the word if you're a journalist? White or black?
No, if people would just stop saying it eventually it would no longer be part of the public lexicon. If you call someone a bugger now its meaning will be lost on most people. There was a time, especially in Europe, where the word was incredibly offensive but because of its relative nonuse people won't get offended.
Same with the n word, if people just stopped saying it most people wouldn't know what it means in 50 years. The easiest solution is just to phase its meaning out of society so it no longer has power. That way in 50 years a white person could go around saying it to black people and they wouldn't get offended if they've never heard it thus eliminating the power it has now
The "N" word must be very special, people with dark skin from America, Cuba, Jamaica and Africa can use all the time, sing it and say it in simple conversation it like a Canadian saying "eh" but if a white person says it...it means they are racists.
if a white person says it...it means they are racists.
Nah, that's not necessarily true. I'm a white person and I feel comfortable using the word in certain circumstances. I'll say it right now: white people who want to call people ######s, and bitch about being labelled a racist for doing so, are stupid people.
See, it's easy!
Now you try.

So stupid.
What possible reason does a white person have to use the word n*gger as intended?
A person typing a list of situations when they would like to be able to use it just might be a racist. Just because it's missing a blue starry X doesn't mean it's not a red flag.
