Default Giordano Extension. Kypreos: Starting point is $72 million over 8 years

http://www.tsn.ca/getting-giordano-i...-list-1.316831

Quote:
Sources say the initial ask from Giordano’s camp, headed by agent Ritch Winter, is in the neighbourhood of $9 million per season. Treliving declined to comment on that dollar value amount. Of course, the first ask is usually quite different from where the two sides eventually settle.

An average annual value of $9 million would put Giordano in the top five of the NHL in terms of cap hit, with P.K. Subban the only other defenceman in that group. A strong case could have been made for Giordano to be included among the Norris Trophy finalists this season, even though he missed the final 21 games and Calgary’s two-round playoff run with a bicep injury.

update:
Nick Kypreos @RealKyper
#Flames Giordano now eligible to sign #NHL extension. Hearing starting point on max term is 72m over 8 years.

ouch.... I'm sure he'll get close to that but I think that's too much for him.

Well, at least Calgary has cap space and time to negotiate. He'd get that or more as a UFA, with how crazy the market gets for defensemen.

If they start at $9 and Calgary starts at $7, have to think it would eventually settle around $8?

They can ask, but probably won't get it. I'd think they'd end up somewhere closer to 7.5 or 8.

I'll guess and say 5 years, 41 million.

Yikes.

Although if they are starting at $9 that probably comes down to the $7.5 to $8 range which is to be expected.

Also pretty sure Winter and Burkie are good friends (started that MBA program together) so hopefully that will help with negotiations.

Not sure what's wrong with asking for that amount. Why would Giordano lowball himself right off the bat? This is exactly how mostly all agents negotiate. He'll end up somewhere south of there, as is expected and as is the going rate.

Oooof. If he gets that much salary it needs to be shorter term, or at least front loaded to bring the AAV down.

9 million for the first 2-3 years seems a bit high, but it's reasonable. Gio's been underpaid for 3-4 years now. paying him highly for the first few years goes a long way in keeping him happy and works for the salary structure till the big money kicks in for Monahan, Brodie, Gaudreau, Bennett....

I think it's time for a trade if Gio's over his head!

As much as I love Gio and want to see him stay in Calgary, that is an outrageous sum for a player his age. For a deal with the kind of term he'll demand, $7.5 seems about right.

in his career how many seasons has he had as a top caliber NHL d-man? two? He has had more than his share of injuries too and is no spring chicken

9 isn't worth it, would rather demand a kings ransom in a trade than pay him 9 for any length of time

Also, the recent use of "ask" as a noun is ####ing annoying.

Not surprised, I was expecting a range of $7.5M to $9M, with $7.5M being extremely hopeful. My guess is they settle at $8.7M, over 6 years.

The term is more important that the dollars in my opinion. He's no spring chicken anymore.

If I were him, I'd obvs ask high. But I'd try for the longest term possible since by the time he's 36 it'll be harder to get another contract.

Yikes...I'm sure he'll settle down closer to 7.5M to 8M but I'm guessing their strategy will involve extending the term to offset the lowered annual salary. I'm not too comfortable with a 5-7 year deal above $7M.

Something like that could work for both sides? 7m AAV.. Dunno if he wants to stretch term to 6yrs for his 42m though; or if the flames are looking for that kind of term. How old is he after this year again?
