I know many will hate it but I think the Flames take a look at Chris Stewart in free agency. 27 6'3, 220lbs. If he would sign a 1-2 year deal I think there is a fit there. I prefer a 1 year deal just in case he bombs which is possible.

Is it though? It would bring Dubnyk to age 33, pretty much the swing zone of a goaltender's prime years, and at $5m AAV, that is on the low end for salary for any of the current top 10-15 goalies, which I think is a pretty fair assessment of where Dubnyk is at right now. Of course there would be some risk, there is risk with any player. Will he regress? Maybe, probably. Will he regress to his 13/14 Levels? I really doubt it. Will he provide Ramo/Hiller type goaltending at the very least? I'd bet on it. There is also the chance he is a lights out phenomenon like this year, he has proven capable of that though I would not expect it.
My point is that he is as more likely to stabilize our goaltending for the next half-decade than any of Hiller, Ramo, Lehner, Talbot, Ortio, Gillies or McDonald.... He's more proven than any of those options and he's free (trade asset wise). Not that I don't believe in our younger options, I just don't think any of them will be ready to be starter for 2-3 years, at least. We need someone to bridge that gap, as the worst thing we could do would be to rush a young goalie.
Even if we re-sign Ortio to be a $1.5m backup in a year's time, that's only $6.5m tied up in goaltending, well within the range contenders spend on the position. Not sure how that's "painting us into a corner" unless you really doubt Dubnyk's ability to play to his career averages over the next five years. I see no reason to believe he won't perform AT LEAST to that level, and that is going to cost something in UFA. At minimum, $5m AAV for a player of this caliber has to be expected, and with some term. It's not as big a risk as some think. You have to pay someone to be your goalie after all, and Devan is as good, or better, than any other option available at moment.
Sign Dubnyk, stick it to the Oilers, develop our young goalies with patience... what's not to like? Someone's got to be the starter for the short-medium term, and I'd rather him than Hiller or Ramo personally.
Devan Dubnyk, by no fault of his own other than formerly being a Coiler and having a hilarious last name has been the target of so much verbal abuse, ridicule, jokes, etc, that I don't know what I'd do if he became a Flame. I'd likely just keep on keeping on and hope the satire of the whole thing would be enough to make it endearing. But let's be honest, I'm sure I'm not the only one that's said some s*** about Double D.
Oiler's past aside, I like the idea of going after Dubnyk. He seems like the type to fit in our system, and based on the Minny run, we know he can handle starter and be a workhorse too. Treliving link in Arizona perhaps?
I think 5 years is ok. I doubt Dubnyk would just randomly fall off a cliff after year 2. Furthermore, I'm more inclined to believe Gilles will take about 3 years to develop and at that stage even if Ortio is capable of taking a 1A/AB tandem, I'm not sure Gilles would be totally ready for joining the 1A/1B. On top of that, if an injury occurs, what do we have? Doesn't that mean we have to acquire another goalie? Furthermore, most of the assumption also believes that both Ortio and Gillies and MacDonald all pan out.
Spoiler!
Not talking money, how would the development of goalies go?
Theoretically... could this be feasible?
Ortio is 24, Gillies is 21, Macdonald is 19
Dubnyk is 29.
Above is assuming the goalies finally hit form around the age of 25-26 even though prime age of goalies is usually assumed around age 27/28. It also assumes we keep all our goalie prospects.
Another time theoretical is if we become playoff contenders in 2-3 years, Dubnyk is early 30s, Ortio is 26-27 (prime), Gilles is 23-24 (Still a little early), MacDonald (21-22) probably just breaking AHL. If we are competitive for 3-4 years, Dubnyk gone, Ortio 29-31, Gillies 26-28 (prime), MacDonald 24-26 backup/regular. Based on age alone, other goalies like Lack, Talbot etc fit fine too as we just need someone reasonably established only a few years older than Ortio but we equipped to show him the way.
Sorry, I'm just musing aloud. Someone feel free to poke holes in my thoughts.
Wouldn't mind Dubynk. I wouldn't mind Stewart either (as long as the term is 1-2 years MAX). If he responds well to Hartley's 'motivational techniques', he could turn his game around and become quite the player. I wouldn't bet on that though (thus the low term), but as long as that term is low it wouldn't be a bad risk to take.
However, count me in as someone that would be just as happy for the Flames to just stand pat. I think the Flames have the right mix of vets and kids right now, and will need to off-load some of the younger players who look like they may not crack the roster any time soon. I don't even care if the Flames don't address the defence - Engelland should get a lot more confidence from Hartley this year, and hopefully Wotherspoon indeed takes his training very seriously and comes to camp very prepared (and healthy this time!). Seems like a decent pairing there. If not, I would welcome Schlemko back (and hope they re-sign him actually as the 7th).
Will be interesting to see where Ramo gets signed and for how much dollars and term. I like him, and I would be fine if the Flames decided to re-sign him and trade Hiller. I am just interested to see what kind of contract he gets as I personally don't think he is due for a raise (wasn't he originally signed for 3.75 or something close to that?). Flames payed a bit of a premium to pry him away from the KHL, and I wonder if he doesn't get at least that if he doesn't return to the KHL.
My guess on Glencross is Phoenix. They need to hit the cap floor, Phoenix is the closest team that should be interested in him, and he is still a decent option as a 'jack of all trades' utility player. I think it is a good fit.
"You can never have too many defencemen" - I don't think there has been any GM in the history of the NHL who didn't state this at one time or another, and I expect the Flames to be in on all of the more sought-after D in the league - Sekera, Martin and MAYBE even Green (though really doubtful) - and assuming any of them actually become UFAs.
He's the perfect 5th defenceman who can play up and down the roster. Good skater; great first pass, can play PP, and good in the shootout. His advanced stats are great too. If you look up his HERO chart on ownthepuck.ca, his advanced metrics other than points and TOI say he's a top 4 guy.

Serious question, is this all based off the games he played in Calgary? Because thats a pretty small sample size to give a waiver wire pickup 12 million.
Still crossing my fingers that we can lock Schlemko up for 4 year ~12 mil
Are you immediate family? 3 million a year is excessive. Term is also too much for a bottom pairing guy.
At most, if they were to offer him a contract it would be at most in the 2 year 1.5 to 1.75 AAV. Even that is a little generous for a multi waiver fodder dman.

Includes his numbers from AZ and DAL as well.

Seriously though, he was on waivors last year and played because we had injuries. He would probably jump at a 2 year 3 million total $$ deal.
Bottom pairing d men under the age of 30 get paid as UFA, I wouldn't be surprised to see 3x3.5 or 4x3. Sorry I may have misspoke, I would be happy with signing Schlemko to anything below 4x3. But if you think he's signing for anything around $3MM or $2MM total you're out to lunch. He'll be closer to 9, maybe taking less if he signs with the Flames
