I had some trouble following the first episode and wasn't very engaging. I guess there were too many central characters moving too fast and felt very rushed.I get that it's centered around a suburb in LA, but I never got the LA vibe from their scenes.

I guess expectations were too high given how great season 1 was.

underwhelming compared to episode one of last year. But a lot of the episode was devoted to giving us some character development. I'll stick with it.

Yeah, I was worried when the named all the new actors. Afraid of too many characters and the problems you mentioned. Plus part of the charm of the first was the ever evolving relationship between the two main characters. Something you can't get in a multi main character set up. But they could still pull it together. Just going to be a slow start.

I did enjoy it. Did feel a bit forced though.

I think time has softened your guys' views of season one. I had stopped watching the show after the first two episodes because they were so boring and I found both characters to be horrible cliches. It is only because of everyone raving about the show that I gave it a second chance after the first 7 episodes aired that I started watching again.

I am glad I did. I will give this one the benefit of doubt.

Really liked it; much more then S1E1.
Season 1 turned out great but was a very slow process. I think it would be forced if they did that again and I'm glad they're pacing this season differently.

YMMV, but the season one premiere did a lot more to grab my attention than season two. Fewer characters, the jumps back in forward in the timeline, the crime mystery - they did more for me.

But I'm totally onboard for season two and excited to see where it goes.

I can honestly say that was one of the worst episodes of television I've ever seen on HBO. Almost laughably bad. A complete parody of itself.

I loved season 1 and and never could've imagined such a complete and utter disappointment to start season 2. But wow....that was incredible levels of bad. Almost seemed like an SNL skit making fun of true detective.

This article pretty much nails my feelings on it. Its like the writers/director saw the fine line between dark & edgy and pure cheese, and decided to cross that line at every point, right from the opening credits.

True Detective's season two premiere, "The Western Book of the Dead," is a ridiculous, ridiculous episode of television.

It's so in love with its own self-seriousness that it forgets to tell a story, and by the midpoint of the episode, it had me rolling with its frequently glowering performances and pointlessly weighty dialogue. I've seen two more episodes that are both better than this one (if only marginally so), but this episode marks a new low point for the franchise. It's dumb, dumb, dumb

Shocking ending.

They need to keep Vince Vaughn away from monologues and keep him in gangster mode. He's significantly more effective that way.

Does it feel like they're building Taylor Kitsch's character to be some closeted, self-hating, gay guy? They did the over the top "he's lucky I didn't punch him in the mouth" ending to his story, and then he was watching the male prostitutes.

Also, Rachel McAdams' character seems kinda like a freak ... sexually.

Does anyone else feel the dialogue is difficult to follow? I had to replay several scenes over.

How many scenes of a single car traveling a lonesome Louisiana highway and/or industrial plants and refineries were in season one?
