Big game for the Hitmen tonight, its the 3rd meeting of the season between the rivals and the Hitmen really need 2 points tonight...the Rebels have pulled ahead alittle bit and the Hitmen need to stay close. Always a tough game in Red Deer. 7:00 pregame, 7:30 puck drop on the fan.

Always enjoy the Rebels-Hitmen tilts. It sure makes for some intense hockey.
The Rebels have improved by some margin since the start of the season games between the teams and it certainly helps them that Phaneuf is almost unstoppable now. Festa has come into his own and is playing very well in net too.
Scott Bowles has answered his critics & doubters in the best possible way and is proving he belongs in net for the Hitties. From everything I've read he's keeping the team in some games.
I'm somewhat surprised at Calgary's spotty play so far but it's still relatively early. They certainly have the horses to do very well in this league and it could all come together still.
Not tonight, though!

We've already given the Rebels 3 points this year to put us behind them. Fortunately, the past couple weeks should have taught the Hitmen that they wont just beat opponents on talent alone. We should see a 60 minute effort tonight, rather than the 30 and 40 minute efforts that marked our first two meetings with Red Deer.

Well I'm steaming about that game. Quite simply the Rebels were robbed. They scored a perfectly good goal with a little over a minute left only for the referee to mysteriously disallow it. No reason whatsoever for it. Apparently he told Sutter that he "didn't see it." Well he was standing in perfect position situated right behind the net. Everybody in the building saw it go in except the guy most perfectly placed. Unbelievable.
Dion was injured behind the play on another non call by the ref. It looked pretty bad to me.
Bowles was the only reason the Hitmen stayed in this one, making 47 saves some of them outstanding. He's more than proven himself in my mind.
Overall, besides a poor second period by the Rebels (were they still managed 18 shots) this was a good performance by Red Deer. I'm quite pleased with this "massively inferior" team. They can play quite nicely with the Hitmen.

Yup. That was one of the things I said when I was arguing with a couple Rebel fans during the season opener. That night the referee screwed Calgary, but knowing WHL officials, We'd get the benifit the next night. In this case it apparently evened out.
Any word on Phaneuf's injury?

Did the Hitmen have a perfectly good goal ruled out with a minute left in a tied game in the season opener? Or was there some question about Fraser's last minute tying goal? Nah, I think this has been more than evened out now. You gotta admit, even as a Hitmen fan, that that was brutally bad, right?
As for Dion's injury there has been no word as of yet. It seems a little ominous to me though as he's a tough kid. He will, obvously, be badly missed if he misses any time. The Rebels did do ok in the third period without him but that huge missed assignment in the OT probably would not have occured as Phaneuf would certainly have been out there at that time in the game.
Yeah, I'm pretty ticked about this, you can probably tell.......

Jagger, the Fan broadcast had the PA announcement of no goal because the whistle went. It was a quick whistle because the ref lost site of it. The Rebels still deserved to win the game because they outplayed the hitmen for the most part but Bowles held his team in again. These last few games the Hitmen shouldn't have had 1 point nevermind 2 but because of Bowles they are winning. This should remind you of what Cam Ward did for the Rebels for a few years...stealing his team some wins...and No I'm not comparing Bowles to Ward.

The whistle most certainly DID NOT blow until after the puck was in the net. There wasn't a quick whistle at all. I was watching the referee closely as he was perfectly postioned to see the action. It was an absolutely terrible decision, made worse by the fact that the ref did not consult with anybody (assistants, goal judge) afterwards. He simply blew the call big time on this one.
edit: In the paper the Rebels said there was a quick whistle in the first period which prevented a goal but not on the late marker.

Not that specific scenario, but we've had goals unfairly wiped out this season.
In the season opener, Referee Herman spent the entire third period trying to win the game for you guys. you finally did.
I can't answer one way or another on the apparent goal last night because I never saw the game. Knowing the quality of WHL referees though, I dont doubt your recollection.
Did the red light come on? Did the referee consult with the goal judge?

Yes and no he didn't.
Whatever, that's the quality of WHL officials for you. Kelly Kisio stated that the Hitmen have had four or five of those wiped out so far this season but I'd be willing to bet none of those were as late as they were and in a big four point swing game. Oh well, must........get.......over..........it There will be many more times I'm ticked at the refs this season, I'm sure...

I agree with you on that point...the refs just get to me...the ref last night is a rookie ref in the WHL, he had been a linesman before this season.

On the radio I heard someone mention a seperated shoulder, but I can't confirm that

Well, I am willing to forgive a rookie ref, as there is a chance he will learn from that mistake.
It is the veteran referees - especially Derek Herman - that I cannot stand. For those guys, they've been here long enough that they just arent going to learn or improve.

That would be my best guess given the way he skated off the ice. It really didn't look very good to me. Hope he's back soon as how do you replace a guy like that?

Damn near impossible. He is arguably the most talented rebel and could go down as the best player to ever play for them. It shouldn't be serious, if it was we probably would of heard something by now. Bad timing for him though, he was having a great season, top 10 in scoring and first for PPG.

Injury update:
In the papar today Phaneuf is listed as day-to-day with an undicslosed collarbone problem. Assistant coach Dallas Gaume has stated that he may well play the next game. We'll see...........
