Default Finally I'm jumping off the cliff.......

I have decided to move to Calgary. I will be living with relatives till I get enough for a Deposit and first month's rent for an apartment or basement suite. I was just wondering where are the best places to look online for a place. What areas do I advoid. I am familiar with the NW and NE and some of the SW, but will be working out of the SE.

Also what are the storage rates like for furnature storage, power rates. Telus or Shaw?

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Don't know how much of this thread is still relevent, but you might find something useful in there.

http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthr...ight=apartment

Telus has some sort of "new PC when you sign up" or something. saw an ad today. might be worth looking into.

Since i don't rent anymore, im not much more help. Sorry.

Yeah, I thought about moving to Calgary too. Now that I am done school, I would like to try living outside of Ontario for awhile. I was told that it was difficult to find places to rent in Calgary, any truth to that?

Where are you moving from Greerb, if you don't mind my asking?

I ran into a guy at work the other day, and he was stopped in the parking lot of our supplier...

He was just gazing at the clear blue sky.

"Isn't it just amazing?" He asked?

I looked up, expecting to see a fighter jet, or a comet or something...

He said he had moved from Toronto, and you never see such a clear blue sky due to the humidity, smog etc.

"God I love Alberta" was what he said.

I know your from the capital, but still.... never really thought much about our sky here before...

There might be some lonely guys on this site willing to help you find a place to stay

comments like that run the risk of turning this into a cf.com style thread. :P

while finding a decent place to rent (considering cost, location, size, etc) is difficult, I've found that making a fort out of your wads of money makes suitable temporary shelter.

Very true.. on both counts.

Unless you're like me and in high-tech, in which case they still pay you in candy wrappers. God I need to get into oil.

I'd like to move to Calgary if I could find a good job. I applied for a web/graphic design job there a month or so ago but didnt get it. If I did happen to get a job there I would have a backup plan for a place to stay for a while seeing as I have family there.

you obviously don't know what CA Students make...I'm taking the scenic route to get to my money-fort. If you're on a budget, making your fort out of 5's goes a lot further than those highly over-rated 20's

A friend just rented out her condo off 17th Ave and had these tips for would be renters here.

- pull the trigger on something you like and is a good match for you quickly. You snooze you lose.
- Have a list of references and other job info ready to go. Most people will ask you for these, and the quicker you can provide them, the sooner you can act. Preparing a "renter's resume" is not a bad idea. Don't be afraid of applications - it's par for the course.
- If you're out of town you're at a distinct disadvantage renting as most people want to meet the person they're renting too. Even coming out for a week is worth your time.

We were stunned at the amount of people applying who had simply pitched up in calgary, found a job no problem, and were simply trying to find a place to live.

Behold, the wonder that is craigslist.org:

http://calgary.craigslist.org/

Look under "housing"

Jobs aren't the problem. If you can't get a job in Calgary, then you don't have a pulse. Everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY is hiring. Calgary has got to be the most difficult city in Calgary to get fired in.

They renamed the country Calgary too? Wow. Those folks in Ottawa must be impressed with what we are doing out here... or maybe it is just because the Prime Minister is from here.

Forest Lawn is really nice. You might have some luck looking for a place over there.

Sadly not for much longer though. Take a look at our sky and then check compared to anywhere in Saskatchewan. We are becoming a smog ridden city faster than you would believe.

I think Ottawa has a pretty clear sky. We aren't as smog ridden as Toronto. But I don't doubt that it's nice in Calgary.

I would be willing to take advantage of that if it really is as hard to rent in Calgary as I have been hearing.

Actually, the prevailing west winds in CGY blow all the smog east to SAS. The only time I see smog in CGY is when I look towards the eastern horizon.

I know you weren't volunteering. I would take advantage of others....

(I was also just kidding, so no worries. Continue looking at your shoes now)
