I personally hope they add some talent on the blueline and top 6 to keep pace with the west. LA, Dallas, Colorado likely are all better. Even Edmonton won't be an easy 10pts like it was last year.
If they make all 6 picks so be it but I am hoping one of those seconds is used for a player that will help now and for a few seasons
|
Yeah, yeah. They were poised to take a step back last year. What does that mean? Player development, asset management, league ranking, conference standing?
If you are referring to development, then I totally disagree.
They will continue to make progress developmentally.
Keeping this year's picks is not mutually exclusive with adding a top six and a defensemen. They might be able to do both, as they have other assets.

If Shaw is included in the Leafs' proposal, that would make the deal more balanced, for sure, but, while most 'Hawk fans are resigned to having to move Sharp, the loss of Shaw would be tougher to swallow...he has become a fan favorite with guts and heart out of proportion to his size and talent.

I'm wondering what you guys think of a trade for Brent Burns?
SJ is in the midst of a re-tool/transition. He is 30 and a beast. Could be a great fit on our 2nd D pairing.

Unless talks with the Ducks escalate unexpectedly this week, plan is for Matt Beleskey to become an unrestricted free agent July 1. #TSN

Probably pointless to get him because of how much he'd cost.
Would much rather go for Braun if we were to go for a 2nd pairing defenseman. He'd cost way less than Burns and is 2 years younger.

burns isn't playing on anyone's 2nd D pairing he is absolutely a premier player. and he would cost an arm and a leg to acquire.

Belesky will cash in on a great season and playoffs, hopefully not with the Flames though.

I am strictly referring to league/conference standing. If the Flames stand pat with a very similar roster they will be very hard pressed to duplicate last years performance where a lot went right on the ice. Bennett is a huge addition and if Gio can stay healthy that is another big positive.
The Flames won't sneak up on anyone this year and will be a team no one takes lightly. Getting to the playoffs again will be a big challenge and I hope Treliving adds some pieces that help accomplish that goal (knowing the future will not be compromised)

Getting into the playoffs isn't as hard as you think. Assuming AZ and Edmonton are at the bottom again, Calgary is basically competing for a spot in the playoffs with 3 other teams: LA, San Jose and Vancouver. However, there are 2 spots available (assuming the Ducks take the conference again). Every single one of those teams are question marks, surely 2 of them are going to go downhill. My money would be on Vancouver and San Jose. They continue to go with the same old core that will not get them anywhere.
I'll be happy if we stick with our top 6 picks, our prospect pool is getting rather bare quickly with a few of our prospects seeing a lot of NHL time.

Sounds like the perfect player for the Leafs to throw a pile of money at to begin their "rebuild." They just won't be able to resist.

Belesky would look great on the Flames bottom 6 for the right price. What kind of money would he be asking for? I wouldn't have a problem paying him $3 - $3.5 million per season for 3 years. I would definitely prefer him over Raymond at the same price.

I don't assume Edmonton will be at the bottom. Adding McDavid and Maclellen are already huge additions to a team that has fire power. Today they have holes but I could see some of them getting filled through trade. I could see them leap frogging the Canucks who I think will be a bad team.
I am not a big advanced stats guy but at the end of the day the Flames had the second highest shooting % in the league and if that fails to duicate itself goals may be harder to come by.
It looks like Ramo is gone the question remains to be seen if Ortio can offer the same quality starts we got from Ramo last year. I am not saying the Flames have no chance if they stand pat and do very little (say sign a UFA forward and Dman) but it will be harder to get in next year unless they have similar puck luck

I think Belesky would be a second liner if the Flames sign him. I look at him or Stewart as guys the Flames target in free agency as they bring size and can score 20+. I fear Belesky is a guy that will demand 4-5 year term and Steeart is a guy you can sign for 1-2 years.
Also I wouldn't be opposed to throwing big money at Justin Williams on a 1 year deal

Valid points, but we are also in the weakest division in the league. I'm just saying it wouldn't be odd to see the Flames competing in the 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs.

I think that Belesky will either take a discount to sign with another contender (around 3 mill cap) or he will get paid by a bottom feeder or bubble team (Calgary) for 4-5 on a 3+ year deal and I would rather stay away at that price tag.

Doubt the bolded part. This is his one chance to cash in on a good season and playoffs. He'll be signing a bigger dollar contract for sure, regardless of where I would say.

In here (blog.triblive.com/chipped-ice/20…) @Mackey_Trib calls Brandon Sutter trade "imminent." I can't say it's close, but definitely are discussions.

Here is something that I have been thinking about since the season ended and Hudler's name has popped up. Hudler and the 15th pick (possibly a 2nd as well) to Toronto for Kessel and the 4th overall. Burke likes Kessel, Babcock knows what to expect with Hudler and he is the type of player they need to guide the youth in Toronto. Guess it depends on what kind of offers they are getting for Kessel and how bad they want to dump him.
Any thoughts?

Oilers have asked Ottawa for permission to talk to former head coach Paul MacLean for an associate head coach position in Edmonton.
