I think part of it, is that we're not pinning our hope on this draft. We've got a good young core in place for once.
I remember back when we drafted Backlund, it honestly felt like the best draft ever just because we drafted a skilled centre, something that team really needed to compete with Detroit. Sure, the chances of Backlund being able to compare with Datsyuk were virtually nil, but at least we didn't draft a grinding winger.
Then a lot of those years we didn't even have a 1st rounder. Sutter really managed to make us draft cynics in that sense.
2013 was really the first time we should have been excited about the draft, yet we only had 6th overall. Sure Monahan ended up being a great pick, but at the time it still felt like if we were gonna be bad, we should have been bad enough for MacKinnon. Last year should have been our first year of draft hype with the highest pick in franchise history and all that - but it was considered a weak draft class and even now, Reinhart and Draisaitl haven't made an NHL team yet.
But this year?
1) We've got Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennett, and Brodie + as vets Gio and Hudler are extremely productive.
2) A lot of later round pick players from those previous draft classes - Bouma, Ferland, Gaudreau, Granlund, Brodie came off fantastic career seasons. It gets you excited about the team's amateur scouting AND player development.
3) For once, we had enough depth on the roster where we were actually a seller at the deadline. Yeah, the team has immediate holes that need filling, but they feel like surmountable obstacles. A 2nd line right winger? A #3 Defenseman? Those don't seem like they're out of grasp at 15th OA.
4) It's a deep draft class in terms of pure skill. The two most purely skilled teams in the NHL just finished the cup final.

I only recall 1 year when we didn't have a 1st rounder.
Of course many others it felt like we didn't have one after we saw who we picked.

With the 4th round magic we've been able to pull off in recent years, hoping they trade to get back in the 4th round. ;-)

And then they tried hyping up 3rd rounder Max Reinhart as "Practically our first rounder, we think we really hit a home run"

My favorite part of the draft was Autter swinging deals. Tanguay in 2006, Cammy in 2008, Bouw in 2009. I was really excited for the return on Regehr in 2011 but man that trade sucked. 13/14 were all about the players we were drafting. I wanted Monahan and Bennett last 2 years and was so pumped when we got them.

While many of us think the Flames now more likely to draft forward with 1st rnd pick, this kid likely garnering some interest and would be interesting to see where the Flames have him on their Draft "Big Board":
Jeremy Roy profile live this morning. Find out why E-Mac dubbed him: "Le QB"

Yeah, the way Treliving is talking the defencemen available won't be on the tier? they will be drafting on but the second round looks more favourable. Lets not forget though that at this time they all lie.

If we do select a blueliner at 15, I hope it is Roy as he sounds like he has top notch hockey IQ and the skills to go with it. No knock on the other guys available but I really want the player who thinks the game the best and has the drive to make the most of his potential. Roy sounds a bit like Gio in this regard.

Calgary only had one year where we didn't have a first rounder.
And in 2013, we had three first rounders.
You new?

I think someone has mentioned him on here before but keep an eye out for Loik Léveillé. Could be a decent 3rd round pick up.

No. This is an 18 year old.

Reddit hockey did a mock draft where fans of each team made decisions for their respective teams. Not a fan of how it turned out for the Flames but some very interesting trades.

IN:
Oliver Kylington (15th overall)
Zack Smith
TJ Oshie
2015 4th rounder (116 overall)
Bryan Rust
2015 2nd rounder (56 overall)
2015 5th rounder (137 overall)
OUT:
Jiri Hudler
Dennis Wideman
Drew Shore
Patrick Seiloff
2015 2nd rounder (52 overall)

Yuck. That's a doomsday/people gettin' fired/horrible nightmare/debacle of monumental proportions/worst case scenario if I've ever seen it/one.
Seriously, just brutal.

If I'm reading that right we also got Cody Franson, of course leave it to fans to make 40 big trades during draft day....when in truth we might see 1 or 2 across the whole league.
