Flames Sign Backlund to Multi Year Deal! 3 years, 3.575m AAV.
Really like it. Bennett, Monahan, Backlund will be a solid set of centres for the foreseeable future. Then you consider that Colborne and Jankowski could also step into that group when needed and it looks like the team's future down the middle is pretty well set.
Can understand why some would like it to have been longer, but I think this contract maintains some needed flexibility. And by that I mean that it is a very tradable contract.
Not saying he will be traded, but if others step up in the future (Shore, Arnold, Jankowski, etc), Backlund's contract would be very movable and attractive.
Also, there are still some questions as to what exactly Backlund is. Keeping it only 3 years not only buys 2 years of UFA status, it also keeps things short enough to see how things play out without major commitment.
Really smart contract IMO.
Treliving continues to slowly but surely and consistently impress me.

Backlund has is solid, has shown flashes of being able to really contribute offensively, is responsible defensively. If he can stay healthy he may be able to put up even better numbers. If he can't then it is 3 years as opposed to something longer.
I think it is good for both sides.

Good signing, hopefully Backs can stay healthy. He stepped up his defensive and physical game this season and is a solid player to have on our roster going forward.

Absolutely fair deal for both sides, great signing.
After seeing Backlund kinda skim along with bargain salary it's nice to see him finally get some decent coin. He's been a loyal and productive Flame for quite some time.
