AFIK, it's always been open except any trade made after the deadline means that players cannot play for you until this upcoming season.

Dubnyk is looking for north of $5 million on a long-term deal. That could be significantly more than the Wild’s willing to stomach after seeing Dubnyk play for 3 ½ months, particularly with the cap issues the team faces this offseason with Dubnyk, Mikael Granlund, Erik Haula and Christian Folin still unsigned.

However, with Matt Cooke looking like he’ll be the NHL’s first buyout casualty, the Wild would save $2 million in cap space this year and thus have about $12 million now in space.

Depends how long the long term deal is. I'd sign Dubnyk to 3 years $5m AAV but I wouldn't go any higher/longer than that.

1) ...He was good for the Coyotes. He finished top 3 in Vezina voting after those three months with Minnesota but he was great for both teams. Arizona traded him because he was hurting their McDavid tank.
2) He had an off year in 2013-14 but his 2010-11, 2011-12, and 2012-13 seasons were all solid (at or above league average save percentage each year), especially considering the #1 pick-getting teams in font of him.
3) we pay a 33 year old Jonas Hiller 4.5 million a year. Considering Hiller's recently (last four years) not approached a season as good as Dubnyk's second best over the same time frame, I don't think it's out of the question to pay Dubnyk a slight bit more.
4) He's 28. If Term is 4 years, I'd be willing to do it. I agree more than 4 years is pushing it.

Personally I would offer him 5.3 m AAV over 4 years. If he wants more, NBD but if he's happy with that, I think we'd be happy with it. And if/when Ortio or Gillies or MacDonald emerge as a #1 I don't think that contract is tough to move - potentially with a good return even.

Really curious as to which player NYR would want from the Oilers; only one I can think off is Yakupov; I can't see the Rangers wanting anyone with a big contract, since they are close to the cap

I've always thought Dubnyk was better than the situations he was dumped in and he really shone this season but a long term deal at 5M+ is a huge crap shoot, no thanks.

Yeah, I wouldn't have a problem with that at all. Dubnyk gets a bad rap because of the Oilers stink on him. Dubnyk had only one bad year since 2010-11. I think the constant suckage in front of him in Edmonton finally got to him in 2013-14 season.
