I want to add 40cm to my narrow driveway, but now I feel bad about it. Even then it will only take up 1/4 of the lot frontage. I was going to ask permission from the city first though.

Fleet Policy, but yeah you could insure them.
Now, could you afford to pay the premiums that is another question.

This is reinforcing my desire to move to Lake Bonavista.
Nice lake, beautiful trees... What more could I ask for?

Aren't people living in a household assumed to be driving each other's cars? I thought that was a big deal not long ago when people's insurance rates were going up because they had a relative in that was a new driver?

C'mon. Nobody's going to get a fleet policy between aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc. just so they can park in this random senseless scenario Wormius cooked up. I believe that has never once happened in the history of Calgary.

Tongue was in cheek for the Fleet Policy part.
That being said, you can insure anything if you are willing to pay the price and find the market.

What do you mean? It's completely feasible and better than them paving over their front yard, which will inevitably (hopefully) need to be torn up. After that they'll need to seriously consider parking strategies or buying a small fleet of Smart cars or Fiats rather than SUVs.
And like I said, the auto insurance companies likely already presume they're driving each other's cars and have priced their insurance accordingly, whether it is official or not.
The only time it would fall apart is if there was a work vehicle or you had a guest arrive before one of the other residents came home.
In summary - pool your money, buy an acreage, and park like a boss.

Hey *insert person's name* I have to go to work can you move your car quickly for me so I can get out of the garage
nah, just take my keys and move it onto the street
sounds good
Now it's a crazy conversation and concept but perhaps it could replace paving your entire property.

You would think that with 6 to 8 abled-bodied adults in the house, it would be so much easier to keep a nice lawn.
Some days in the spring (and the middle of winter too) I wish more adults would live with me to help me mow, de-weed, rake, fertilize, shovel snow..etc

Just browsing around, and found this...

Is that a street or an alley? It's paved like a street, but has house-asses facing it. Who designed this area?

Alleys can be paved, looks clearly like an alley to me, not sure how it can be confused to be a street. What's wrong with the design?

It is a rear lane. There are some wider ones in town that facilitate quicker access to homes without attached garages. This is practically a necessity for cul de sac happy NE Calgary.

Why waste so much space with an alley? It looks wide enough to be a street to me. Then on the other side of those houses, you have this:
https://goo.gl/maps/DGmYK
A sidewalk on an island, the street narrower than the alley behind, and no sidewalk on the cul-de-sac. Sorry, seams like a stupid design to me. I wouldn't want to live there.

For extra parking of course Actually came in handy for that purpose when the Genesis Center lot filled up.

Okay, I admit, having a sidewalk on an island is just stupid. Even worse is that it's not even a rounded curb like all others in Martindale, so you can imagine the curb rash on the rims.
Probably to prevent them from using it as a parking pad.
Also think we found the minivan district.

You do realize there is a huge percentage of homeowners who struggle with changing a light bulb, or don't even realize it's possible to put a keyed lock on their basic builder grade sliding door. Even if they were told about it, they still have to bypass their laziness to get one and install it. If they can't get around to maintaining 40 sq ft of grass, you know there are many other household things falling into neglect.

Now that I re-read your post, I see that you meant "other people". When I replied, I thought you were talking about why YOU don't park out back.

I don't think it's un-neighbourly to pour concrete on the side that you share with the neighbour's driveway, because it's no worse than gravel, which is what is probably there. Or to pour straight out from your walk, if your walk is one of those ones that does a 90 degree turn and hits the driveway. That might as well go all the way to the street. Gives you an extra 3-4', which is really nice in the winter.
