If they re sign Green, even without Alzner they have a pretty solid top 4. Without Green or Alzner it does start to look weak...but still not terrible.
Hudler would be a huge addition for them, in the leadership area as well. I think it's a perfect fit for both teams.

What about Bowey + 22 for Hudler?
They might do that.

I feel like the price for Hudler should include a good roster player in any potential package.
Good roster player and a good pick. Maybe in the 26-28 years old age range, giving the Flames a good productive piece for a few more seasons than they would maybe get out of Hudler should he command upper echelon money and term next year.
It really sours me to talk about trading Hudler though. I still believe he's an equally important part of the leadership and culture building core on the Flames along side Gio.
So if he were to be traded it better be a deal that on paper looks heavily slanted in the Flames favor.
Just Spit-balling what I consider a good trade:
Hudler for Rattie and Berglund and a future 2nd round pick. Size, a pick, and a natural RW near NHL readiness.
I would keep Hudler. He's a perfect example of what we need more of on this team. Skilled, great puck protection skills for a little guy, team player. He's a positive influence on the team culture. I think it would have to be a monster deal to part with him if it was up to me.

The Flames were nicely set up to move UFA veterans in an orderly fashion over the next few years - Hudler this year, Wideman next year being notable examples of trade deadline assets. Now with Hudler's emergence from solid team player to leader on and off the ice, Wideman's resurrection and the team's success do the flames stick with the plan? Cold hard logic says they do - they are not contenders for a few years and they should build towards then. Similar to the way they traded Glencross, though he was not such a big piece.

He may want to be back, but how much are they willing to pay a guy who's on their 3rd pairing? every report is that 90% chance he will not be back. But if they were to resign Green and trade Alzner, that's a huge downgrade defensively.
Hudler would be a great addition for them I agree, however what it would cost isn't worth it for them.

Big pass on that. A small skilled forward a guy that never is going to reach potential and a lottery ticket with small odds is not worth it at all.

"Talking with the media on Friday at the Capitals’ annual breakup day, Green said he’d like to re-sign with the Caps as an unrestricted free agent but wondered if they will be able to afford to keep him as a third-pair defenseman who likely will command more than $6 million a year.
With long-term commitments to defensemen Matt Niskanen [6 more years, $5.75 million cap hit], Brooks Orpik [4 years, $5.5 million], John Carlson [3 years, $3.966 million] and Karl Alzner [2 years, $2.8 million], the Capitals are more likely to take Green’s current $6.083 million and put it toward resigning restricted free agents Braden Holtby, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Marcus Johansson."
That's what separates the wheat from the chaff among NHL GMs.

What about the effect on morale with the young players ?
I'll wait patiently for Tinordi to provide examples and not just drive by as usual

Well, think you got your answer on that one, as he's since posted but has no interest in responding to you.

I don't think 76 points for Hudler was necessarily a fluke. He was buried by talented wingers in Detroit and came here to fill a hole in our wing with endless opportunity to turn into an elite playmaker, and he did. We were a very bad team when he got here and wasn't exactly playing with first line guys, no offense to Cammy and Tanguay, but once we got some raw young skill for our first line for Hudler to work with, he finally reached his true potential.
Losing Hudler for the character side of things is also a tremendous loss, but we still have Gio, we still have Mony who will probably get Hudler's A when he does leave, and guys like Boums and Russell. Hell the whole team has a ton character, thats what the flames look at in their drafting, they're built on it.

I dont get why Flames fans would want to trade Hudler? Top ten in scoring, 4 million a season, veteran player who helps the young guys out. He is the Gio of the forwards! Is he getting older? Absolutely, we all are! Is he getting worse? Career year. Same goes for Gio!
We all want to resign Gio right, longterm? Who is older Gio or Hudler? Gio is! Who is replacing Hudler?
Does this mean I would not trade Hudler for the right package? I just cant imagine what the right package is for our leading point producer on this team. You remove Hudler from this team you remove playoff hockey from this team. Owners made a killing for the first time in a long time having playoff hockey back in Calgary. Tens of millions of dollars were made.
I just dont get fans around here. Sure I want to upgrade our roster, Hudler is not a weekness on our roster. He is a strength. That plays a very important role for this team.
Trading Hudler seems so Oilerish. Lets rush Poirier and Hunter Smith into first line duties. Hand them jerseys without earning it! We should be talking about extending Hudlers contract not trading him.

Maybe read the posts explaining why before you get all dramatic about it?

Everyone loves Hudler. I would rather keep him around, however there are two hard questions which make it a difficult situation:
1) What sort of contract will he get next summer on the open market?
2) If the Flames can't afford to re-sign him (cap-wise) then what sort of return via trade can they get to maximise the asset?
Hudler would cash in on the UFA market. He deserves it. His production has been superb and, at his age, he'll want long term and a big salary. Treliving has to decide whether or not he wants to commit term and money to Hudler or cash in and get some good complimentary players for the young core.

I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Well before this Freidman stuff came out.
Still feel the same way I did then but I can deal with it if it is in fact a way to help the team be better long term. Hate....Abhor the idea of losing Hudler though.
