Even if it wasn't lopsided, I'd prefer not to import the playoff disappointments from other teams.

Healthy scratch isn't so bad, people make the big deal about it but with a young player it happens, even in the AHL. I remember TJ Brodie with the couple healthy nights in the press box, in the minors.
Beyond that Mantha had a broken leg to start the season. Not going to widely speculate here but if it is off ice issues I'd take a chance on him regardless. Big scoring talent. Needs to work on his skating and own end play, but what big guy coming out of juniors doesn't.

Good on Treliving to only move Huds for overpayment.
I think a Washington trade would be good: Hudler for Washington's 1st and Bowey.
Hudler would rack up the points with Ovechkin and Backstrom.

I google news stories on Mantha after reading the story on Devellano's comments. Seems like it was an intended message to Mantha that he's got to earn the spot. He wasn't understanding the need to push the pace, but improved near the end of the season
Edit: Here's a decent newer story:

"It's important for him, like it is with all young players, to hit the gym and come back strong, more prepared, more determined," Holland said. "The problem some guys have is they don't respect how good the AHL is. When you get into a pro hockey league and you're not prepared and you get behind, it's a long way back.
"Now the year goes on, you lose your confidence or the coach loses confidence in you and all of a sudden you're not playing a lot of minutes, or with the best players, you start to question yourself and things start to spiral away from you. . . It's hard to get your confidence back."
The Wings have made no secret of their expectations of Mantha -- same as they are for every player they acquire with a precious first-round draft pick. Earlier this month, Senior Vice President Jim Devellano said publicly the team was disappointed, but Holland tempered that remark a bit in an interview with FOX Sports Detroit this afternoon.
"Ultimately, it's player development," Holland said, underscoring a core value of one of professional sports' most consistently successful franchises. "It's about patience and the organization communicating to the player the areas we think he needs to improve on and the adjustments he needs to make -- and at the same time supporting him, letting him know he's important to the future of the Detroit Red Wings.
"We want him to be good, and when a player is struggling we're not going to pile on. At the same time, we're not going to be a soft landing place for him, either."
|

Professional sports, after all, is about competition at its highest level. If you're not ready to compete all summer long and every day of the winter -- even in hockey's minor professional leagues, someone is going to take your job.
"I think I underachieved a little bit, obviously," Mantha said. "I would have liked to have scored 50, 60, 70 points. That was my goal at the start of the season.
"I just need to work on my strength for sure, getting quicker on my feet. And I need to keep pushing, play harder and shoot the puck more each game."

When was the last time the Flames moved a legit top line forward coming off a career season? Doesn't happen very often league wide anymore, but I'm very curious to know as to what Treliving could get. I would definitely not be opposed to trading away Hudler if the price was right. And I love Hudler.

20 scratches would be a big deal for a 1st round pick but since it was a broken leg maybe Devallano's statement wasn't negative to the player but disappointed that an injury derailed the start of his pro career.

No, they were legitimately disappointed in his progress. He underachieved by everyone's standards, but seems to have learned the lesson I think

agreed, I would really like to see Bennett get allot of practice time and some playing time with Hudler, even live in his basement if possible. Whatever Hudler is doing to mentor young players it is working.

Unless it's a massive overpayment I don't see Hudler going anywhere. It's more likely that Stajan or Backlund gets moved due to the surplus we have at the center ice position.

I love Hudler, but trading a guy in his situation is exactly what rebuilding teams do
-over 30? check.
-coming off career season? check.
-pending UFA? check.
I get that he has intangibles. I get he's a great influence and a great leader. I get that he's Jiri 'frickin' Hudler. But, from a pure asset management perspective AND from the perspective of hopefully being contenders in 3-4 years, this is absolutely a move that should be seriously considered. That said, I will be sad the day #24 moves on, he's been probably the best UFA signing in team history. One of my favorite players to wear the flaming C in the last 20 years.

If the Flames are committed to winning long term, they need to explore everything to get more picks. We have all watched how the young players turned this team around. In the playoffs, it wasn't the veterans that got the Flames to the 2nd round, it was Gaudreau, Monahan, Ferland and Bennett that primarily led them there.
In order for the Flames to become eventual contenders, they will need to get more talent in there. This draft is one of the best in recent history and having 6 picks in the top 90 will ensure that they will stock the organization even more fully. Getting more will make it even better. I am not worried about dealing any of Wideman, Russell, Backlund, Jones, Stajan, Hudler, Raymond for draft picks/prospects. There are more than enough guys that would want to come here through free agency that we will be fine either way. It wasn't the veterans that were driving our success last year. Anything that can reinforce the talent of the youth should be looked at seriously.

Not a chance, way too good for the Flames in this deal.
