14 more sleeps. Feels like a relative is pregnant and we are waiting for a new family member.

Dan Marr of Central Scouting was 960.

He feels the ledges in the 1st round will be: 1, 2, 3-11, 11-20, 20-30.

He also thinks teams will find players they had ranked on the team's internal list in the 30s in the 3rd round (ie 61-90th OA).

You're right- family in Kelowna for 15+ years. Just asked the fam about Gatenby- my younger brother has never played with him, only against him. Had this to say:

-his game is similar to Nik Hjalmarsson's, in that he's a smooth skater and plays more of a finesse style rather than a physical one.
-plays simply, works very hard
-has the potential to be a good AHLer, longshot for the NHL
-they think his little brother has more potential

That's something anyways! Cheers.

Thanks much for that insight.
He may be an interesting one to watch. He comes from a family of big people (tall and big shoulders) so I doubt he's done growing yet. I held muay thai pads for him when he was in 6-7th grade. Typically, kids that age can't make your hand sting through a focus mitt. He could. Very strong as a little guy. Will be watching this draft with great interest.

About this Svechnikov debate, the Flames will pick the best player they feel meets their criteria. If they feel that is Konecny, they will draft him. Konecny has some great upside and great character qualities that fit perfectly in Hartley’s mantra, but if they don’t pick him it will likely be because of size and they don’t want another smallish player. Also, Svechnikov is a RW, and we don’t really have much there that could step in either now in a year apart from Poirier or Klimchuk.

I think if they fall to us (and they won’t) the Flames would draft Connor, Meier, Werenski. Apart from those I think they might draft one of the following:

Forward
- Boeser
- Svechnikov
Both RW, both powerful and a force offensively.
- Konecny (great leadership qualities and just a competitor, but have heard skating is a question mark)

Defense
- Zboril
- Roy
Both very good puck moving defenseman who have a great compete level and would fit in to the Flames team psychology perfectly.

Anyone think Gurianov might go before 15?

Coin flip. He's gaining steam in terms of chatter in some circles. He really looks that good though. Polar opposite of Svechnikov though where the KHL does play a big factor, will really depend on interviews I guess. Real possibility he does go higher than 15. Boston, L.A could take him.

I guess it's possible, but there are plenty of options to choose from before Guryanov that are far less risky.

I read from a few sources that some think he has top 5 worthy talent. It's just the Russian factor that puts him outside of it. Just like Nichushkin a couple of years ago.

Craig Button is one of them.

Incidentally, Button gave him 5/5 for both skating and shot in his rank and scouting report. He gave Svechnikov 4 for both.

If Guryanov is on the board, you draft him. The risk seems to be overblown. If the kid is good enough to play in the NHL, then he will play in the NHL. The only exception to this that I can think of right now is Radulov. Kovalchuk had a great NHL career and made his decision based off family.

KHL flight risks are overblown. Look at Nichushkin. Dallas Stars got a top 4 player at #10.

Depends who else is on the board. You would take him over Svechnikov?

Think the 15th overall gets you Griffin Reinhart?

But then the Flames have to make room for Max who I figured they would be throwing into a trade this summer.

Islanders are loaded with young defensemen (Leddy, Hamonic, de Haan, Hickey) already regulars, plus Boychuk signed long term, and Pulock close.

Snow can't possibly sit still till the 72nd pick!

I was wondering what they might give for the 45th OA in a deep draft like this one. Looking at their prospect base, it looks pretty slim in some areas (although they have some good recent graduates). Having such a pick might be worth more to them than most teams.

There are about 55-65 good players in this draft (Same class of prospect as Granlund/Wotherspoon or better) and those should extend to our second 3rd rounder.
