Apparently Shaw's upgrading their speed and if you power cycle your cable modem and have I-Extreme, the speed could jump from 7Mbps to 10Mbps!

I tried it but didn't work for me, but others have had success apparently.

Hey guys. I know it can depend ont he area you live in, but is Shaw generally faster than ADSL?

ALl of my friends who have Shaw beat me in speed. I tested mine at bandwidthplace.com

I just got 1.3 MB/Sec, but I'm downloading a file with Bit Torrent right now too. Is that an ok speed?

well talking with co-workers who are on extreme-i right now (i'm not, but i will be soon) this is true. and while a power cycle of the modem may work, from what i've been hearing usually the modem has to be reprovisioned. if anyone is curious i can tell them what speed they're currently provisioned for and do the neccessary modem modify, as long as it's ok with the mods to post info like serial #'s (don't see why not, but you never know)

Unplug power source, replug power source to the modem in this case.

Ahh, ok guess that kind of makes sense. Ok, basic question #2, and then I will stop interrupting this: what is the point of it? Is it basically just a re-freshing/re-booting type of thing?

Mine was 9mbps last night, and after a power cycle it is still 9mbps. Although I suppose that still means I must have gotten the upgrade. That's cool though, it makes that extra $10 a month a much better deal.

that'll work. so for anyone who has extreme-i and doesn't believe they're on the 10mbps connection yet, just PM me your modem serial # and i can verify or do the neccessary reprovision for it to take effect

not surprising, Telus has always been much slower than Shaw. last time i checked the fastest connection they offered on the most expensive business package was 4mbps, while Shaw's standard connection starts at 5mbps (as long as you have a DOCSIS modem). that may change of course when they finish upgrading their network to ADSL2, which is also what is probably prompting Shaw to up the extreme users to 10mbps. but when it comes down to straight hardware, there is no way that a twisted pair phoneline can compare with a coax cable line for bandwidth potential

Another question. What is the difference between a megabit and a megabyte? Is is just one is the measure of transfer speed while the other is storage size?
