Colombia's first ever WWC goal was a beauty:

The subsequent celebration was great too. Hope folks can see it in the highlight packages.

Having grown up in Montreal and going to my fair share of expos games, that place was awful to watch a baseball game and made even worse once the roof was on.

It's also nowhere near downtown.

it was quite something before it's time though, a planned retractable roof in the early 70s? Something not accomplished until Skydome in 89.

It was just too ambitious of a project.

sure, yes, in it's original format it was a thing of beeauty. But then they started making changes to accommodate baseball, and the whole roof disaster. At this point the building needs about $500 million dollars of Extreme Makeover: Stadium Edition in the worst possible way. Nobody in Quebec is willing to pony up for that cost, and since there is no permanent tenant (Stade Saputo for MLS, Stade McGill for CFL) there is no pressing concern.

I personally drool over the building's exterior, even to this day, but without some serious love this building will always be a shade of it's former self.

The Big O was never a thing of beauty. Not even on the day it opened. Like everyone else, I absolutely love the space age look of the outside, and as big of a dump as it is on the inside, I enjoyed the experience of it in April at a Jays exhibition game. It may be a classic dump, but it is a dump.

I have no idea what FIFA or Soccer Canada was thinking putting games in there. Should have been at Stade Saputo, or in an entirely different city.

The only sort of good thing about the Big O is the Metro runs right underneath so you don't even have to go outside to go from transit into the stadium. And it's great for Monster Jam I guess.

Canada as a whole could learn a thing or two from the Americans when it comes to stadium building.

Make the city pay for the entire thing?

Also, at the time the Big O opened, the US was turning out craptacular cookie cutter stadia itself.

It's unfortunate but the Big O no longer has much going for it. While Stade Saputo was probably a better alternative, I can only assume the Impact were not interested in playing on a plastic pitch for the season.

I don't see why they would have had to change the turf for the tournament.

The entire tounament must be all turf or all grass i think to make it equal for everyone.

Two brutal giveaways in this game. Brazil are more dangerous when Korea have the ball.

I like domed stadiums, I know I would not want to be sitting in the rain like in Moncton today.

You mean like, building a stadium with public money, then demolishing it before it's even paid off to build another stadium with public money? Ya, let's do that...

Covered stands provide the best of both worlds, protection from the elements and an outdoor environment.

You would like to compare a stadium publicly-financed as part of a successful Olympic bid with stadiums publicly-financed to appease billionaires using sports franchises as leverage? Even if you had a point, the Big O was still a boondoggle.

Attendance for yesterday's games in Montreal: 10175. That's a terrible turnout, regardless of the game times, venue, teams on the pitch, or any other reasons. This is a big event and deserves better than that.

I'm sure the place will be packed when Canada plays Netherlands on June 16 though.

Maybe, but I don't I can stress to you how bad that venue is, it's location, the time of day etc... I bet if they played at Molson stadium it sells out (~25k).

How come there are no games today? Is it usual to have days off this early in tournaments?
