So I still don't see the point. As others have pointed out, Skinner is one hit away from retirement, and we pick up two large contracts, give up youth/picks, and one of our only top 9 forwards with size. Skinner is also small. Makes zero sense to me.

I think we will agree to disagree here but I for one like the potential of Ward over Hiller. I was not a fan of Hillers play in the second half of the season and not surprised he lost his job to Ramo in round 2. Likely he wouldn't have been the starter at all if Ramo wasn't injured.
I personally think the Skinner stuff is blown out of proportion. He had one bad concussion that put him out a while but many other players have had worse like say Crosby so to say he is one hit away can be stated for a lot of players.
He had a down year last year but is still just 23 and a little over a year older than Granlund who has not come close to the production Skinner has had. Jones is a highly expendable piece on the Flames or better yet moving Raymonds deal makes it even better. Giving up a 2nd would be required since we are getting the best player in the deal.
Skinner is also bigger than Granlund as hockeydb lists him at 5'11 200 with Granlund at the same height but 185

He may have only had one "big" concussion in the NHL so far, but he's had a handful of small ones as well. At least 4 reported since making the NHL. And who knows how many he had before that. I'd stay far away from Skinner.

Backlund? Colborne? Wideman? Russell? Bouma? Ferland? Jones? A package thereof?
|
I do not believe the Canes would remotely consider any of these players for Skinner. Colborne has no value, Ferland and Jones prob very little to another team. Cane's have zero need for Wideman in their current situation.
Sure if you offer Russell, Bouma and Backs it gets it done, but we know the Flames wouldn't do that.
I just don't see matching up with Canes needs and wants without offering a 1st +.
Would they do Backlund + ? I don't think so. I think Flames fans vastly overate Backlund's value. However, if you could set up a package of Backlund + B level spect or 2nd rounder's' etc I would jump on it.
Skinner is only 23. Sure he has had concussions but tons of players have. Is he really 1 hit away from being done. Is Crosby? That's a risk for any player who has had a concussion.

That'd be a quick way as a new GM to have your fan base turn on you. Raymond is buttery soft for Bruins hockey. No way they consider that since I think if Lucic is available, other teams will be offering more.

And why exactly would Boston do this?
Do people even consider the needs of the other team when they come up with trade proposals?

This is all your subjective opinion, which is fine. But to claim that it's ridiculous to think the Flames could trade for Skinner because they don't have any players of value is far more ridiculous.

So, Colborne has zero value and Ferland not much more. Here is the news, there is very little chance Flames would give up those two for Skinner.
Also, from every show I have seen the commentators always say how undervalued Backlund is.

It's very rare for any fan trade proposal to even remotely consider the trade from the other team's perspective. I'm not quite sure what the purpose is either, like "hey look wouldn't this be awesome for the Flames?!".
Yes. Yes it would, but that means nothing. How many proposals do we see for legit NHL stars/key pieces that have Raymond/Granlund going the other way, plus a couple of picks?
My favorite is when they add something like "I guess we could throw in a third to sweeten the deal". Yeah, haha, that'll do it! "Hey Brad, we thought your deal was ridiculously lopsided in your favour and were going to hang up the phone but then you mentioned that 3rd round sweetener and now we're in!!"

well if they are looking to move him, it would be to save on caps, this does that and provides them with a top 9 serviceable replacement and they upgrade on speed. They still have a window to win so would not be looking just for prospects and pics.

I wouldn't trade Ferland for Skinner straight-up.

Boston would easily get a 1st+ if they traded Lucic. Raymond (who would likely clear waivers), a late 3rd and a prospect that would also likely clear waivers would not interest them at all.

People need to stop with this myth of "Team X is in cap hell, so we are doing them a huge favor in cap relief". Teams make deals to get out of cap hell all the time, but they never, ever, not even once consist of star players getting dumped for next to nothing.
You have to remember that there are 30 teams in the league, despite the fact that certain teams are in cap trouble does not negate a bidding war/interest from other teams.
Everyone always makes cap hell GM's sound like thieves with stolen items. "Yeah, yeah yeah Brad, just take him. I don't know what do you got? Raymond and a draft pick? **** that sucks, okay okay, let's do it, I just need out of this item, and don't let anyone see!".

I wouldn't do it either. Why would you want to trade Ferland one of the only skilled forwards Calgary has that plays with any sort of edge, for Skinner, a smallish left winger who has a serious history with concussions?

The Flames have already said they need to get bigger and tougher to compete with the Anaheims of the league.
Trading a young player like Ferland makes no sense if that's the case. Same with Colborne. Of course anything is possible, but they won't give those two players away for nothing. I don't think I'd trade Ferland for Skinner either.

Considering the Canes were interested in Backlund a couple of seasons ago, and considering they reportedly want to ditch Cam Ward's cap hit, would this represent fair value for anybody?
To Carolina
Mikael Backlund
Jonas Hiller
15th Overall
To Calgary
Cam Ward
5th Overall

Despite the fact I think your opinion on a guy like Ferland's value is out to lunch, it really doesn't matter what you think the Canes would want for Skinner because he'd be a horrible acquisition for us considering his size, position, concussion situation and salary.
We need to get bigger and harder to play against. A small, non-physical forward with concussion problems is a terrible option for a trade target.

Insider trading:
Bob McKenzie says the Penguins have put Brandon Sutter on the trade block
LeBrun says the Penguins covet Brandon Saad, but very unlikely Chicago will move him.
Some stuff on Dubnyk but I missed it
