The consequences of suffering a serious head injury while a motorist or pedestrian are just as big. Why take a chance?

This really is about social conventions and not about empirical risk analysis. Again, in countries where cycling is an everyday part of life for most adults, almost nobody wears bicycle helmets. And they aren't any more likely to suffer head injuries than Canadians are.

I would think it's about 10x more awkward to not cheers' someone trying to cheers you. What do you do? Honest question. Somebody tries to give you cheers and you just shake your head no and stare at them, or go on a monologue about how you don't do that?

Do you refuse to shake a person's hand too? Do you trust nobody? What's your angle here?

When people say let's raise a glass to so and so and blah blah blah. I just don't pick it up. Likewise when people just start bumping each other's glass, mines on the table, I'm not doing it.

I've never had anyone say anything to me, if they do, I'll just say it's not my thing.

So you're at a wake, and someone says let's raise a glass to Fred everyone... you just won't do it? Is there a line where you'll finally succumb to the act or just forever never do this? I'd imagine Fred's family wouldn't think highly of that omission.

No congrats? No honouring?

You can't say congrats or sorry for your loss without holding a glass of alcohol in your hand?

Fred's family wouldn't give a #### if I had a bottle of beer in my hand when I express my sadness for their loss to them. If they were the type of people to hold a grudge for a silly social convention like that, I probably wouldn't have been friends with Fred in the first place.

I'm interested to see numbers on a per km of activity basis. As well as information that helmets without a restraining device for the helmet and 5 point harness is actually safer than in a car as the added head mass could pose issue. Also would like info on the pedestrian risk of head injury vs bikes.

I like good risk assessment over anecdotal.

As an aside just biking today my daughter destroyed her helmet by loosing control going of the edge of a pathway and ramping off of a curb. Cracked shell and the Styrofoam compacted by half. Would have easily been a trip to the hospital if not worse without the helmet. I realize you agree with helmets for kids but modelling good behaviours will pay off when peer pressure hits.

Your basically telling your kids if they are good at biking no helmet is required. At about 14 they will be good at biking, real stupid, but good at hiking. And at this time your logic will allow them to justify removing their helmet.

Really interested in sources though as you appear to have researched it well.

To add I would agree with you if you said mandatory helmet laws are bad. They discourage cycling which increases risk for all cyclists.

When I'd go through the self checkout at superstore, or the like, I'd pay with my spare change and not the quickest option. I'd use 30 pennies just so I didn't have to roll them up for the bank or use the nickles and dimes that accumulated over time in my change jar.

What if you go for a beer with just one other person and they want to do it? I do that with my friends when we go out sometimes and that would be incredibly awkward and weird not to do it. For example a trip with a friend and you sit down for that first beer, you wouldn't raise your glass?

Also what do you mean "its not my thing"? That just seems weird. When someone says "I don't really enjoy hiking, its not my thing." I might disagree, but I get it. It could be a long day of walking or whatever. Here though you're taking literally two seconds and clinking glasses. Is that really anybody's "thing"?

I don't think my dislike of social niceties is quite as extreme as some, but when people bring their kids or animals to the office and everybody goes clamouring and fawning over them, I just stay at my desk and try to ignore them. With the exception of close friends, I don't really like other people's children, and I don't really see the joy of holding babies or lying about how cute they are. I think babies are only considered cute by their own parents.

I really hate children, but if someone brings their puppy I'll gladly waste time going to see it.

And for what its worth, I think its awesome to not cheers people. Just the other night I was at an event I was at and there were a couple of people there I simply detest, and I'm sure the feeling is mutual. After the first round and everyone cheers'd, one of them looks to me for the obligatory cheers and I just drank while looking at him while he stood there with his glass in the air. I drank almost half the beer before he eff'd off.

I also think its stupid when bands do the whole "sociables" thing with the audience. From now on, when a band yells "socialbles," I think Johnny199r should yell "f*** you!" in response.

Lastly, this thread has inspired me through reminding me that when I think about my good friends and why we're friends and all that stuff, that one day it is going to be perfectly acceptable for me to double fist bottles of beer while getting smashed at their funerals, and completely obliterating the wakes. Its what they would have wanted.
