I can think of many scenarios in the late '00s where Canada seemed to get BS calls against them in Gold Cup and WC Qualifying.
I'm starting to wonder now too. I forget the WC qualifying cycle, but we had a brutal offside call against us bring everything crashing down.
I'm hopeful that some element of it is that Canada refuses to play the game with CONCACAF and FIFA. That would be kind of awesome, especially if FIFA gets wiped out.
Yeah, the Irish got screwed and everyone knew about it; if that was the other way around, I'm sure there would've been Platini and the FFF successfully lobbying backdoor channels/Blatter at FIFA, in getting a replay of the game. Getting to the World cup means mean much more than $5m Euros to the various football federations, nevermind having a minnow in (IRE) vs the French as 2006 runners up and all its FIFA political pull, out. And recall, France was then a disgrace at WC2010....scoring one goal against South Africa crashing out in 3 games, and then having a mutiny.
While there may not be FIFA-levels of corruption, that's not to say CONCACAF, especially with Warner in the mix, had its own questionable practices. Poor officiating or not, this was one of the worst calls I've seen...
The Irish case sounds more like a settlement to avoid litigation than corruption.
Regardless what way you look at it, it was hush money. Money that should never have been accepted or at the very least been declared publicly at the time. In fact Delaney and the FAI should have been screaming from the heavens that they were being paid off.
The FAI looks as bad as FIFA on this one. And hopefully this spells the end of Delaney also. Basically admitted that he allowed FIFA to pay him off.
This is a great week for Roy Keane, first Jack Warner and now Delaney under the spotlight.

The German newspaper Die Zeit reported on Friday that the then chancellor Gerhard Shröder supplied arms to Saudi Arabia in return for support in Germany’s World Cup bid, in which it defeated South Africa 12-11 in the final round in controversial circumstances. The claims alleged that the government lifted arms restrictions days before the vote in order to make the shipment and help swing Saudi Arabia’s vote to Germany.

Keane? He only played -- what did he do?
(leaving USA WC? water on the bridge -- long ago)
(unless you mean his comment about United fans haha)
Keane has absolutely zero time for Delaney, before and even more since the Saipan walk out and Warner he clashed with whilst manager of Sunderland over Dwight Yorke.
Diplomatic as ever.
Quote:
Keane has already spoken to Warner on the phone. "I think Jack Warner must be small because he's got small-man syndrome," he said. "I told him he was a disgrace and that I would not employ him. The man is a clown. I told him what I thought of him and where he should go.
"Although he's working for Trinidad and Tobago he's writing under Fifa letterheads, trying to impress everybody. Forget all this talk about directors of football - if he's vice-president of Fifa, God help everybody. He's obviously quick to let people know he's in a position of power. But sometimes these people get up the ladder and I don't know how."

Looks like those comments are from 2008, but I personally, don't mind what he said.
Yeah, they are. He was asked yesterday at the ROI training camp about Delaney and Warner and was quite quiet (for the moment) on the matter.
Quote:
The only line that Keane offered on Delaney in his broadcast press conference (he held a separate briefing for the written media) was said in jest. Asked whether the chief executive of the FAI, a man Keane has had countless run-ins with in the past, had become a distraction, he laughed and said: “Isn’t he always?”
Alas, not even the open goal provided by Warner’s exposure shook Keane out of the boring, diplomatic routine. “I’ve had issues with everybody,” said Ireland’s assistant manager, again with a smile. He was clearly enjoying swerving the issue. But, as Delaney must know only too well, Keane won’t swerve it forever.
Ahh!! I wonder if he's keeping quiet so as not to burn bridges with the FAI, and ensure he's employable?
And the comment above about banning them?
That is completely illogical. A couple executives should be punished internally by the FAI, but punishing the nation and players for not fulfilling an appeal "appropriately"?
Germans don't mess around. Everyone else paid money, bought someone a vacation property, the Germans give weapons.
I would not be surprised if most of the bids in the last 15-20 years have had some sort of back room deal to help swing votes in favour of someone.
That looks to be almost guaranteed, apparently you dont get votes unless you give them something. Its as though their normal paycheques were insufficiently satisfying.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

It's not a matter of did bribery occur but a question of how much took place? Also, I reckon it goes back further than 20 years.

FIFA is guilty of a ton of crimes and improper procedures but this does look more like an out of court settlement to avoid the negative press surrounding a court case that FIFA probably would have won fairly easily. If RoI is going to be banned for taking anti-nuisance money, it would set a precedent where Canada would make the next World Cup with the amount of nations that would have to be banned. However, we probably didn't get the Womens World Cup by being squeaky clean...

Trust me on this one. Keane could care less about the FAI. He's got a HUGE axe to grind with Delaney and if there is one thing we do know about him he will harbour resentments and grudges. He's only kept quiet for the moment as there is a game coming up. I'm guessing Martin O'Neill has asked him to hold his horses.

Lol get out
This is Scottish Flame we are talking about. Bigotry is not based on logic.
I will retract one thing though and that is my comment that the FAI should have made it clear at the time. Turns out there was a confidentiality clause in the agreement and the only reason they are mentioning it now is because it was leaked by someone else.
I don't get what the appeal would have been anyways. It was a ref error and as said in the preamble the ref's decision is final.

I thought they were one of two applicants and the other (Zimbabwe) withdrew theirs later?
Generally people who call people bigots are the real bigots themselves. I stand by that ROI should be punished if they accepted money as should every other country.
