Looks like a rain delay tonight. When they get going Thole is in to catch Dickey, EE and Pillar sit, Smoak will be batting 4th, Bautista will start in RF. Navaro should be back with the team tomorrow.

Thole is actually hitting Zimmerman well today.

Jays had the bases loaded in the 7th but Russell hit into an inning-ending DP. They used both Russell and EE there and got nothing for it.

I love our league best GM pitching to the best hitter in the league with 1st base open!

Yeah, I don't think anyone understood that move at all. Gibbons definitely makes you scratch your head at times.

Smoak has been okay lately, but something about him bugs me. Hate seeing him in the #4 spot. Like him better as a PH.

Shut out 2-0. Hope they can do better this afternoon.

Smoak at #4, no EE or Martin in the starting lineup, Bautista looks like his arm is going to fall off when he throws the ball......frustrating game.

Awesome game for Pillar, 2 HRs, 4 RBI. It's painful watching Bautista lob the ball back into the infield. Hope he's not making a bad looking arm even worse.

Buerhle pitching well, has a hit, broke up a double play with a slide into 2nd, and a sacrifice bunt. Its 7-0 Jays in the 7th.
And JB, for the grief he gets for complaing about called strikes, he does seem to get the worst pitches called strikes. Might be a product of the complaints but still, umps should just call em right.

Nice to see the pitching and hitting come together at the same time. Nice game for Buerhle, a complete game shutout on 93 pitches. Great job.

Best part of the game was Buerhle hard sliding into 2nd to break up a double play.

That sarcastic clap by Bautista after the check swing was absolutely embarrassing. That is the embodiment of why this team is awful. Total loser leading the clubhouse. Sooner the jays realize this the better. Believe it or not I cheer for this team. Bautista needs to go. Addition by subtraction.

They've got to do this while he's on just current contract to maximize their value. Not sure you'll get a fair return, but it'll change the entire culture on the team. Bautista loves blaming umpires and management for his issues, sometimes you wish he stop wearing his emotions on his sleeve and play baseball.

Josh Donaldson should be the clubhouse leader (if he isn't already), he cares about one thing and one thing only and thats winning. I think he could contribute a "win now" culture on the team. He never calls out the umpire, fights with opposing teams, and willingly calls out teammates when they aren't playing to the best of their ability. Both Donaldson and Bautista are great players, Donaldson just conducts himself differently then Bautista.

Just a thought, maybe move Donaldson to the number three spot and Bautista to the number 2. Donaldson is already the best player on the team and has earned the 3 role more than Bautista this season. This also could establish Donaldson as the clear leader on the team.

If you think that Donaldson is the better hitter then you want him in the #2 spot...

Interesting take. I just think that it's baseball's unwritten rule that the best hitter hits 3rd. Bautista has been batting 3rd for quite a while now, and until now he's been the Blue Jay's best hitter.

I think you just need to show Bautista that this guy is the new leader guy in the clubhouse.

I don't care for unwritten rules that result in suboptimal play. With regards to "leadership" here's the thing... leaders lead... if the guys follow Bautista then he's the leader if they don't then he's not. You can't arbitrarily declare X the leader because you like the cut of his jib or whatever. Doesn't work that way.

Besides all that Bautista is good at baseball... I like guys that are good at baseball. The Jays just need more guys that are good at throwing it.

Im not saying he isn't good hes a great baseball player, many of us just don't like his attitude. When your number 3 guy is consistently chirping away at the umps and showing them up, there's always a chance that they call you might not get borderline calls down the line. Baseball players play baseball, Bautista needs to keep his mind on playing baseball rather than picking fits with people.

I understand the whole leadership argument. Problem is Bautista, until this year, was the best player on this team and to me the best player is one of the leaders of the clubhouse. He has a reputation of being thrown out of games, showing up umps, and he'll will even show up management. While you think it might not matter, I believe it does after watching the development of Brett Lawrie and how he got into arguments with umps, I couldn't help to think that Bautista didn't play a part in it, even if it may not be directly.

I find this stuff somewhat fascinating. In terms of avoiding outs, than a guy like Bautista with the highest on base really should be the leadoff hitter. Although in terms of wasting the power, it makes sense to move him down to 4.

Although if there were no ego's and BS in Baseball I would maybe not look at Bautista as the better #2 option because he has the high on base number but less power this year. Donaldson should be hitting 4th.

To me the top 3 spots the focus should be on the OBP. I agree that the speed can be a waste because stealing bases potentially takes the bat out of the hands of the guys in your lineup who can best cause damage. But as you get down to 4-5, my personal feeling is that the batting average should start to factor in a bit more. A bases loaded walk doesn't count two runs like a bases loaded single, or three or more like an extra base hit can. So Donaldson who's a good OBP guy, but has a higher average and slugging is suited to hit 4th. Bautista who's slugging is down this year and low batting average, but has a good OBP, is better suited to that 2 spot.

I wonder what the reaction would be to see an order like:
Carrera
Bautista
Martin
Donaldson
Collabello
Travis
Smoak
Encarnacion
Reyes

I imagine some would lose their minds.

I think I'd probably go...

Reyes
Donaldson
Martin
Bautista
EE

... among the core guys.

Sanchez is dealing tonight - 2 hits through 6 innings.

As for the earlier discussion on Bautista, I admit I used to be firmly on the side of "pfft, these leadership debates are silly", but the manner in which he injured his shoulder earlier this year was really selfish, and the sarcastic applause really rubbed me the wrong way. Still think you hold on to him and EE, but I'm not so quick to defend Jose these days.
