I often go for after dinner runs up "The Stairs" right behind that old Signal Hill Target location. The early 30s'ish dude I've seen there in the evenings lately, teaching impromptu exercise classes (mats, weights, stereo, the whole nine) behind the building to attractive, rich (judging by the line-up of Audis parked right beside it) young women - and also making passes at them I'm sure, which I don't blame him - will not like this news.

I am guessing that a major clothing chain (likely Simon's or Uniqlo who are entering and expanding nationally) will take over some of the mall locations in the future.

Good news about Lowes. The Rona in Westhills in expensive and lacks selection.

lol, Uniqlo? In Canada? I wish!
Also, Simon's is going up on Stephen Ave (downtown) in 2018. Not sure they will put up a second store without testing the Calgary market with that one first.
If Good Life had any brains, they would have moved from their awful Richmond location (old, needs a major facelift) into that huge former Signal Hill Target. But they didn't. Ugh.

Surely the Target locations are much too large for Uniqlo no?

Has "Behind the Target" become the new "Chicken on the Way basement"?

i work across the street from chinook and go over there at lunch a lot - right now there are more closed stores (Target as well as some other more traditional sized spaces) in the mall than there have been for as long as i can recall

Gyms are pretty unappealing to large retail landlords. They pretty much fit in when the space is undesirable to their traditional tenants. Look where they end up normally, in large, undesirable space that's been poorly received in the market or not leasing well.
It wasn't by choice of Goodlife, it would have been because they're not able to compete for the space. Landlords were bidding on their own leases to stop tenants like gyms getting in there. No landlord in their right mind would want a Gym taking prime retail space with cheap renewal options going into 2090.

I honestly wonder why Target didn't work out in Canada. It works in the USA and they have far more competition here than in Canada.

I thought Canadian Tire might move over into Signal Hill from their current crap location.... otherwise this isn't a shock.

Sweet. Now Home Depot will be taking it dry in Shawnessy and Signal Hill.

Because their Canadian offering was a crappy, understocked version of their US stores. Which happens with a lot of retail chains of all sizes that expand into Canada. They half-ass it, and assume that Canadian consumers are just going to eat it up as though we don't already have our own half-ass national chains.

Why it didn't work? Terrible supply chain management and there were Canadians who have been to Target in the USA.

Nice to finally get a Lowes on the west side of the city. I would have preferred NW, but this is still better than driving to Sunride or Crossiron.

What's the advantage of Lowe's compared to Home Depot?

Would have much much preferred HD over Lowes, but finally having a reno store in the west is good news regardless.

Nothing that I can tell, but the nice thing is to see a US chain actually try to stick it out and expand even in a softer economy compared to Target who never really put in a full effort and tucked their tail and ran as soon as they saw challenges in their way.

In my experience both the prices and service are better at Lowes.
