If McDavid hits a few bonuses, he will make a lot more than the regular ELC as well. Close to $3M if he gets most of them.

They also lose a ton of cap next year.
They are not nearly in cap jail like some people believe.

I was quoting the 2015/2016 season numbers. They are very much in cap jail, assuming they plan on playing NHL defensemen. This might not be in their plans, admittedly.

I wouldn't say cap jail, but they aren't in fantastic shape this season. A goalie and 3 d-men minimum, and they need to upgrade in both positions which won't be too cheap.
I agree the season after will help them a lot. Gordon, Purcell and Nikitin coming off the books will give them some nice relief.

All the players coming off still have to be replaced and going cheaper doesn't mean they will be replaced by better players although finding a player better than Nikitin shouldn't be difficult.

Fair enough. Nikitin's spot should be an easy replacement. Having 3 players like that come off the books would be where a strong prospect base would reap rewards for the Oil, but since they can't draft to save their lives they will probably need to look outside the organization.
For a team as terrible as they are it's really strange that the cap should be considered at all in the near future. What a gong show they've been.

What young defensemen are available in trade?
Anaheim has a bunch of young D, but no reason to trade them.
Pittsburg has som good young D. Can we fill holes on their roster? Hudler?
Chicago?

Islanders have a lot of D and one of them should be available. Unfortunately itl likely won't be Pulock or Reinhart. There was rumour a few weeks ago that Gelinas was available in NJ. There might be an opportunity there.
I also feel like the Jets may have a dman available in the near future although it'll likely be a veteran. Byufglien, Enstrom, Myers, Trouba, Stuart, Chiarot, Postma and Pardy on the big club and Morrissey looking to crack the team. Makes me think they would be able to part with one of the top 5 as a result. Buffalo is also potentially interesting with a lot of good d prospects but the big names are likely unavailable or pricey.

If Seabrook does become available, I throw a big package up.
He shoots right so...
Gio-seabrook
Brodie-Wideman
Russell-Engellend
That gives you a balanced top 6, with versatility, and a puck mover and size balance on every pair. Good physicality. A cup winning D!
Only question is the return. Our 1st+Wotherspoon+Granlund?

Not sure I'd give up this years first but I'd be tempted. I'd give just about anything but this years first, Johnny, Monahan, Bennett or Brodie. Other than that, I don't know what we have that they'd want. Maybe Hudler if we kept 50% but other than that I don' know. I'd be willing to take any contract off their hands too.

There are probably some young defencemen available but good young defencemen available are probably non existent. Teams don't give up that kind if asset without massive overpayment.
If you go the trade route you would have to give up a monahan gaudreau or Bennett to get one. Best option would to be go to an organization that is flush with d and target a guy who's buried in minors due to this depth. Just pulling a name out of the air but a guy like Aaron ness from nyi. Would be an unheralded move but one that is low risk/high reward.

I would just wait a year for him to become UFA rather than give up assets for only one guaranteed year of service.

Interesting to see what Anaheim will do with D, Wisniewski makes 5,5 million and has two years left. IMO Beauchemin will be resigned, but there is too many puck movers with Vatanen, Fowler and Wisniewski. My guess is that they have to move Fowler or with wisnieswki take some salary back.

It would take more than that. Wotherspoon has looked lost in his time in the NHL. I doubt he turns out to be much more of a tweener. He looked overwhelmed in his game against he Jets and Hartley couldn't even put him on the ice during the playoffs without some serious sheltering. Granlund is a nice bottom of the rotation forward on an OK NHL team. Debatable whether or not he could even crack the Hawks line up. And a mid-round first has probably 30-40% chance of becoming an NHL regular ?
If I were the Flames I would think any serious offer for Seabrook (without giving up one of their core pieces) would start at Piorier+1st. If you can get Seabrook to sign an extension, you would likely have to add more.
I seriously doubt Wotherspoon and Granlund have much value across the league. Every team has similar pieces in their organization already.
Certainly, the Hawks will get a better offer than two bottom rotation guys, who have yet to establish themselves as NHL regulars, and a mid first for a guy who can play top-two mins on any team in the league and still has 3-5 years of good to great hockey left in the tank.

Wayne Scanlan @HockeyScanner
My take on the Sens goalie situation: the inclination was to move Anderson, 34. But, there is far more market interest in Robin Lehner.
Wayne Scanlan @HockeyScanner
So, Lehner more likely to be dealt. Overall, Sens comfortable with an Anderson-Hammond tandem. With O'Connor, Hogberg in development hopper.
Bruce Garrioch @SunGarrioch
Seven teams have called on Lehner and Anderson - more on Lehner. #Sens

I would consider Poirier a future 2nd liner, and piece of the core with any luck. I would rather give up Klimchuk. However, Flames are early in the rebuild, not sure if that's a great idea to get older. Are we trying to accelerate the rebuild?

I think they could trade Wiz without retaining salary. If they lose Belesky perhaps they would have interest in a Wiz-Jones/Raymond swap?
I do not see why they would have any interest in trading Fowler unless they get a solid young top 6 in the 22-25 age range

I'm leery of Seabrook, just because he looks good but has an elite partner. Has Keith ever been injured for an extended time so that Seabrook performed on his own? Mind you, he'd be paired with Gio, so there's that. But it would take a massive cost.

i would not be trading any of our prospects that we selected in the first round for anyone in their 30s at this stage

I'll admit I'm more caught up in the idea of Seabrook helping the team now but that shouldn't be the goal. For what it would cost, I don't know if it would be worth it or if it would just put us back where we were a few years ago. I'd much rather go after Dougie Hamilton with an offer sheet as it wouldn't cost us anything that's in our system right now unless a trade could be made that's a bit of both.
