Default Infant Formula Warning

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-s...ring-1.3098083

Quote:
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning about possible tampering or substitution of infant formula products.
In a news release, the CFIA says such incidents do not usually happen during the manufacturing process. Occasionally, however, a consumer returns altered products to the store for a refund.
"Infant formula products have been found where the outer cases and containers are intact, but the product inside may have the tamper-proof seal broken and may contain a different product (brand and/or variety)," says a notice on CFIA's website.
No illnesses have been associated with these complaints.
The CFIA advises people to ensure their infant formula containers have seals that are intact.

^ Places like Walmart will just throw out any formula that is returned.

I remember buying about 4 giant boxes of ready to use formula. Found out after the first box my kid couldn't tolerate it. Walmart took it back, but just chucked it. $100 worth of formula right there.

I get that with the opened container, but perhaps the other unopened, untampered should be given to a food bank.

Yet, food banks accept formula, at least when I was volunteering at them they were.

True.

However, policies like this are why anything to do with babies costs 3 times as much as it should.

All stores should be forced by law to throw the formula out, or just ban returns on formula. It's too much of a risk. Infants don't have a developed immune system, and any tampered product even if it is just spoiled can be lethal. Just look at the sterilization prep on the package.

Food Banks shouldn't accept formula for donation either, again it is a risk. We don't even donate our unused formula to friends because we don't want to take the risk, despite our best efforts to store correctly just in case something happens. We instead buy them a gift, or give a GC for a grocery store.

Fook Banks should accept money that they will then buy formula with. Even if the seal isn't broken how does one know if the product has been stored correctly? Just too risky.
