You think that some league execs may have had some informal chats with the Oilers as well?

Well the first confirmed Flames interview
@mikemorrealeNHL: Top prospect Jake DeBrusk of @SCBroncos is in high demand at NHL Scouting Combine - 30 interviews this week. http://tinyurl.com/p3aelh4
Quote:
Swift Current Broncos left wing Jake DeBrusk made certain he had plenty of dress shirts and ties for the 2015 NHL Scouting Combine this week at First Niagara Center.
That's because DeBrusk, the son of former NHL player Louie DeBrusk, has interviews lined up with all 30 NHL teams.
"Yeah, I'll be pretty busy," DeBrusk said. "It's amazing, I'm not going to lie. It's almost unbelievable, but I look forward to talking to every single team."
DeBrusk (6-foot, 171 pounds), No. 19 on NHL Central Scouting's final list of the top North American players eligible for the 2015 NHL Draft, was actually the go-to player for the Broncos in the Western Hockey League this season. He led them with 42 goals, 81 points and 13 power-play goals in 72 games this season. He also had 40 penalty minutes.
"His work ethic is off the charts but what also helps are those 42 goals scored; he's a 40-goal scorer who does the dirty work in front of the net on power play," Central Scouting's Peter Sullivan said. "Guys have made a career of standing in front of the net, and have played 10-to-15 years doing so. But he drives that car for them. I love his work ethic and his greatest strength is his compete level."

How many players do teams typically interview? Didn't Calgary only interview 4 or 5 in Monahan's draft year?

At the combine the Flames usually interview over 50 prospects.
What you are thinking of is that they brought Monahan, Poirier, Klimchuk and Petan back to Calgary for further interviews.
It is pretty rare for all 30 teams to interview a prospect at the combine IIRC Dylan Larkin was the only one last year.

That makes sense. I have to think Meloche is going to get a fair few interviews. A right shooting RD with his abilities will be sought after. From my viewings he seems like a harder shooting Wideman with skating issues. Meloche can walk the line better than Wideman, and doesn't put himself out of position as much.

McDavid interviewed with 5 teams. Heard he had to wear galoshes lest the Oilers drooling all over him got his socks wet. The other interviews were teams telling him how great Eric Lindros was and he should emulate some of Lindros' early hockey decisions.
Eichel interviewed with 6 teams.

The Flames should interview McDavid to see what weaknesses can be exploited in the future! "So you're allergic to celery..?" *hasty scribbling*

Well, it makes sense for a player like Debrusk to get interviewed by everyone. He could easily fall into the second round or he could go as early as 16 (Oilers being Oilers and he is the son of a former Oiler, so it fits)

It is a little confusing why 4 other teams would interview McDavid. I mean, what's the point? Edmonton is 100% getting him so wouldn't it be better to focus all your resources and time on prospects you actually have a chance at drafting?

I'd be telling them how bad the oilers are and how his career will go down the tubes if he goes there. Lindross did it, you could do it too....

All joking aside, I would think that would be tampering. Maybe a team risks it but I think if they were to, it would be in a one on one setting, not in a group. Not that it matters, I'm sure McDavid hears that all the time from his buddies ribbing him about Edmonton. I bet he's considered it but he strikes me as a kid of high character and he likely wants to protect his image. The anti-Lindros. Too bad for us.

Not only too bad for us, but too bad for hockey as a whole. If he would have went to a team that needed the exposure, it would help them and the league out. Instead he went to a joke franchise. I'm sure he's at least thought of pulling a Lindros but I agree with you that he just seems like too honest of a kid to do something like that.
I've always wanted to hear what kind of things are said in these interviews and if there are any little conversations that happen before or after the official interview. I guess if the management team has no idea about a kid and then they talk to him, they could fall in or out of love with the idea of getting that prospect. I wonder if there've been any cases where a team really liked a prospect and then interviewed him and completely changed their mind.

Teams trying to trade up? Perhaps trying to get insight on a guy like Strome as well?

The Oilers aren't trading that pick unless McDavid forces them to. Even then they likely still draft him themselves and then auction him off over the summer. Pointless to interview a kid you have no chance at getting. Even Eichel. If I'm Arizona, I don't even waste my time. I would instead focus on the rest of my top 10-20.

They could just be putting irons in the fire for the future. Seven years goes by pretty quick and McDavid could potentially be a free agent by then.
Making a good impression now could pay dividends later.

Before the draft I doubt Johnny was 5'8 with skates on, standing on a pile of phonebooks.
