Pretty high AAV but not outrageous for a UFA D at his age, in a weak year. I think it's hilarious the Habs like the guy so much that they're willing to dish out essentially a 6x6, but only gave up a 2nd rounder in the trade.

Not a good contract. Both term and value too much for him. Better than Brooks Orpik at 5.5m AAV for 4 more years until he's 39 at least though.

I think Petry and the Habs will choke on that one.

Chris Nichols @NicholsOnHockey
LeBrun: Petry's deal includes a full no-trade clause. #Habs

edit: conflicting reports

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
Jeff Petry received a partial no-trade clause from the #habs.

Yet another Oiler who played significantly better when leaving the gong show.

It's a decent signing, considering the Habs will have Petry's services for the age 27-33.

People saying this is a huge overpayment didn't watch Petry play in Montreal. He looked like a solid top 4 defenceman after leaving Edmonton. Not a great deal, but it's not horrible.

Jeff Petry received a partial no-trade clause from the #habs.

I managed to find an exerpt from his contract that deals with this

"Section 4.1: No Trade Clause

The player shall not be traded to the following list of teams:
1) Edmonton Oilers

Section 4.2....."

If Petry gets 6 x 5.5 I wonder how much more Sekera will get?

Sekera > Petry

So would a team of former Oilers beat the current Oilers?

Who is out there? Off the top of my head:

Dubnyk (better than what they have now)

Smid, Petry, NSchultz, Souray, Gilbert, Potter (better than what they have now)

Hemsky, Horcoff, Gagner, Cogliano, Perron...

who have I missed?

I think we definitely have the makings of a team that would beat the Oilers.

Seemed a bit steep at first glance, but when you realize that this deal will take him right through his prime playing years it may not be too bad. Habs better hope his play doesn't decline too much because if this does indeed include a full NTC that could be an anchor.

2 months.

That, and his Oiler portfolio.

Pretty big gamble.

Seems a little bit high, but is probably the going rate for a top-4 defenseman in my view.

I know it's different situations but wow, the Flames got a steal of a deal for Brodie. Still so pumped about that.

What a hilarious contract.

This will become a boat anchor within 2 years.

It's in the realm of what RH 2nd pairing dmen make. Takes him through all his prime years. I'd rather have Wideman though.

I'm more surprised at the term than the money. He's only been there two months.

I really wonder what Gio gets now. It shall be interesting to watch.

Well that pretty much prices the Flames out of the UFA market, not that they can't afford it but they shouldn't afford it.

Franson just got a 6 mill minimum now. I thought with term you were supposed to get a better AAV?
