Habs sign Jeff Petry to 6 year deal ($5.5 mil AAV)

Acquired at the trade deadline in March, Petry played 19 regular season games with the Canadiens, registering three goals and seven points during that span, in addition to putting up a minus-3 differential.
The Michigan native added two goals and three points in 12 postseason contests.

Was actually hoping the Flames would take a run at him, if the cap hit wasn't crazy.
Mobile, decent size, right shot, still just 27 years old, and a good reason to stick it to the Oilers every chance he'd get.

And a weak free agent pool just got a lot weaker. He was one of the only players I would have wanted to sign with the Flames this July.

That is way too much salary and term for Petry. They will regret that one.

The term's a bit steep but the AAV seems about right for a solid right-handed #3D with size. He'll be 33 at the end of it which isn't bad at all though.

I would have been ok with that. Then I'd have hoped the Flames would have looked to cash in on Wideman's value after an awesome season.

$5.5m per seems a bit steep. I wouldn't have minded him at maybe $4 x 4. But $5.5 x 6?

Yeah not terribly surprised, but not a contract I would give the guy. Don't terribly mind the 6 years since he's only 27, but 5.5 is really steep I think. 4 x 4.5 would of been my max
