Default Shaw rate going up again - Aug 2015 version

Shaw is raising their rates again in August of this year.

If this is another increase without additional services or benefits, I'm very ready to "cut the cord."

If I switch to Teksavvy, they use Shaw. Will Shaw still send a tech out to "install" Teksavvy? Or can I handle it myself, since I'm already with Shaw? I would rather not give Shaw an opportunity to screw things up as I've seen in some posts. I want this to go as seamless as possible.

Dunno why its a shock. They've promised their share holders to do this.

Seriously?

When will this ever stop? Getting ridiculous. And we all know if Shaw does it, Telus will too. Neither are spectacular services offering superior speeds. My goodness, we need you more than ever Google!

I don't understand why they can't begin to upgrade to fiber optics themselves. We are getting lousy internet and paying through the nose.

I wish a third or fourth party could join the fray and offer that kind of services. I would gladly pay.

I believe it's in some newer areas that they are doing Fiber. Same thing with Telus? It's way too costly to put fiber in old areas, and costs a lot less during construction.

That and Cable has a lot more capacity than the phone line Telus carried. I'm sure Shaw can go to 200+ mbps with not too many problems.

According to a chat with a Shaw rep today, every internet package is going up by $3.

Quote:
fredr123: I read that Shaw is increasing its rates again for the second time this year in August. How much will my bill be going up by?

fredr123: Here's the link to the Customer Bulletin: http://www.shaw.ca/Customer-Bulletin...-Rate-Changes/

Sebastien #VI43: Correct, prices will be going up in August.

fredr123: It says Shaw is notifying customers well in advance of changes and that we should contact "us through our Shaw Representatives online by live chat the Shaw Support Community or by phone 1-888-225-6768." if we have any questions.

Sebastien #VI43: The increase affecting you would be $3 on your internet.

fredr123: Fantastic

fredr123: According to my bill, I have High Speed 25. Can you tell me the advertised upload, download speeds and the usage cap for that plan?

Sebastien #VI43: Of course. Just a moment please.

Sebastien #VI43: High Speed 25: Up to 25mbps download, up to 2.5mbps upload, and 300GBs bandwidth

fredr123: So that will go from $67 to $70 per month. Which is the current price of the Internet 30. How much is the Internet 30 going up?

Sebastien #VI43: Everything is going up $3

fredr123: What is the rationale for the increase this time?

Sebastien #VI43: The increase we had in January was late, it was originally supposed to come through in the summertime of last year, but it got pushed back to the new year. The increase in price will help us provide more Shaw Go Wifi hotspots for our customers. It will allow us to improve infrastructure and convert things over to fibre. We can also guarantee there will not be another increase until summer of 2016.

Telus installed fiber in Sunnyside last year. They came by my house to let me know they planned to do it, and several months later when they did it to sign me up on their new plans. I believe they just ran the fiber along the telephone poles in the alley, and minimal ground disturbance was needed.

It may actually be the mid-older communities where they first laid ground cable, and need to dig that is what you are mentioning. However, the really old communities have their internet (Shaw/Telus) by telephone pole from what I can tell.

Wow. We already pay $180 a month for TV and Internet. This is getting silly. It'll be $200 soon. We don't even sub to any movie channels or anything either.

Edit: And my wife and I were just talking last night about maybe adding HBO with True Detective coming up, but I see from the Shaw website that you need to order the Movie Central package to get HBO and it's $19 a month. Ugh, when was the CRTC going to force telecoms to allow us to sub to just one channel again? I don't want MC or Encore Avenue. Guess it's back to downloading TD again this season.

Interesting timing. My bill was also $180 this month and it was basically the point where I've decided that's just way too much to be paying for the usage I'm getting out of it.

Seems like I'll be cutting the cord as soon as this season's Game of Thrones is over.

What are the prices for the fibre packages?

What I do is just pay full price for internet, subscribe to cable during hockey season and cancel it during the summer as that's when all the shows are done. That way I always get the promotional price for cable. So I usually pay around 100 bucks a month.

Problem is, if you like watching TV like my wife and I do, shows like The Whisperers, Wayward Pines, True Detective, etc. are all on now. TV used to go into hibernation in the summer, but now summer is a new season for different shows.

I'm sure we watch way too much TV, but we enjoy it so I couldn't imagine cutting the cord. And, well, we use the Internet all the time. Really, TV and Internet are like power and heat for us. Just sucks it's so expensive.

Ridiculous how expensive it is there.
Bell is currently going door to door here my area, south shore Montreal, pushing a bundle of:
Bell Fibe TV basic +30 pick channels (includes HD PVR)
50MB down, 10 up - unlimited bandwidth internet
Home phone with provincial LD included
For the non expiring price (allegedly) of $79.99/month and no setup/install fees.

This is not an advertised special, but by the look of the Bell trucks littering my block, lots have bought in. I did tell a buddy of the offer, who is a Bell customer, who called them about it. While they would not offer him this promo, they did knock his Bill down to under $100/month for 6 months for same service (including MC/HBO package).
It never hurts to call.

I priced it out late last year and sadly Telus wasn't much cheaper. That may have changed, and if you call them they may do a deal for you. Usually that is accompanied with a 3yr contract.

I think Shaw knows Telus will raise to match like they do with cell phones. Looks like both players are content to keep pushing up and horse trade subscribers.

Done. Internet only for the next few months. Got rid of home phone and television, and told them it was because I want to give them the smallest amount of money possible while still being able to survive. I consider TV a luxury and think what they are charging isn't worth the service I'm getting.

I need Internet at home for my job, and it provides hours of endless entertainment, so I'll have to keep that.

I'm probably cutting the cable cord too and just keeping internet.

I have 150mbps for $99. I got Netflix for $9, and I'll get Gamecenter for whatever. What's the point of cable?

Plus, down here a good 30 to 40% of my HD channels are Spanish. I tried learning through immersion, but it's not happening.
