It's interesting that the sole discussion in this thread seems to be trading up to get a higher pick. I know it's different sports and I have little to back this up, but teams in the NFL have enjoyed great success with respect to trading down to acquire more picks. I'd almost rather see them have more shots at acquiring high-end talent rather than fewer but 'better' chances to acquire high-level talent.

Comparing the NFL draft to and NHL draft is moot IMO.

You're drafting for 20+ different positions in the NFL vs 6 in the NHL. Draft pool in insanely smaller for the NHL comparatively as well.

Trading down and up is easier to do in the NFL because so many teams are drafting in every position of need. BPA in the NFL is used usually in the top 5 (?) given the the draft year.

Whereas the NHL BPA can go half way in to the 2nd round in a really good year and its so hard to draft for positional need in the first round.

To me that would seem logical especially since the NHL is drafting much younger players and so you'd think is more of a gamble. On the other hand I think NHL drafting is improving and fewer low draft picks will turn out to be steals.

Conroy has told that phone call story before. From what I remember, it was the 2011 Draft because it was his first time sitting at the table, Jay stepped away for just a minute, and suddenly Conroy had to answer the phone. Also, if it had been 2012 or 2013, Weisbrod would likely have been the one to field the call.

From his previous telling, I'm pretty sure it was a trade offer that the Flames didn't accept. I also didn't get the impression that it was for their first rounder either.

Conroy was on my flight yesterday from Calgary to Toronto. I don't think it needs to be stated on this forum, but honestly one of the nicest people ever. He spoke to me like we were old friends, just a genuinely nice guy. He mentioned he was headed to Buffalo for the Draft Combine.

Treliving was outside the gate waiting for him, wasn't nearly as approachable, but in contrast to Conroy, who is?

The Premier didn't work for Murray.

One of my old law firm partners was an absolute hockey nut, and Connie lived next door to him in his playing days. My partner would talk anyone's ear off about hockey and said he always chatted with Connie. I had visions of Connie opening his door cautiously to see if the coast was clear, stepping out of the house, and my buddy would pop out from behind a bush "Oh hey Connie, how bout that game the other night? ....."

I've been in the odd meeting room with Murray (not recently though). I wouldn't call him cheap but he doesn't spend extra dollars either.

Oh, better still, Connie was sitting in coach. Not even the Premium Economy / Preferred Seating on Air Canada, just the regular economy seating.

The People's AGM indeed. First time I've ever met him, and you'd think had already met me and remembered me from the last time.

I think when the Mrs. and I get a cat some day, I'm going to name it Conroy.
