Richards buy out isn't that bad after about the 2017/18 season (just over a million for 4 years??)....and his current contract isn't likely to hamper the Flames until then I'd say.
Doubt LA would do that though. They'd be without a 1st rounder for this year and next year.

That Richards contract is just awful though.
A mid 1st wouldn't be enough in my opinion.

Agreed but if Clarkson can get traded then any contract is moveable. They'll probably have to give up an asset eventually but I don't think they are willing to part with their 1st or a really good young player let alone more than that.

Man does LA have some horrible contracts on their books.
Richards everyone knows about, but Brown has been awful for the last couple seasons, and they are paying him close to $6 million a year for 7 more years until he is 37.
Carter's isn't bad right now, but he's signed for 7 more years @ over $5 million per until he's 37 as well.
Even Gaborik's isn't terrible either for the time being, but he's on the books until he's 39 years old at nearly $5 million per.
Hopefully the Kings choke on those contracts until they all expire, and can't free themselves of a single one of them.

They are thin on D as well. I doubt Voynov's coming back and Reggie's retired.

Yup that team took some long term pain in order to get themselves 2 Stanley Cups (could get another one in the next 2 years or so too). As a division rival the Flames shouldn't help them unless they want to give us Carter or Kopitar for free.
Quick, Brown, Richards, Carter, and Gaborik all have at least 5 years remaining, are on the wrong side of 30, at a combined cap hit of $27 million.
Kopitar needs a new contract next year too, and have to think he will want at least a $7 -8 million dollar cap hit.
Means youngest player of that group will be 29, and will be locked up at close to $35 million for 6 players for at least 4 more seasons.

Yup that's what happens when you win a stanley cup. Hopefully the Flames are in that situation in a few years (though truly I hope that they both win a cup and don't handcuff themselves).

I'd probably accept a year or two of cap hell in exchange for 2 cups.

Given all the rumors from last summer about Treliving nearly snagging 7th overall by taking on a contract from Carolina (Ward IIRC?), I wonder if there is any way to nab the 5th overall from them this year? Even if it's just moving up from 15th overall...
Jonas Hiller (1 more year @ $4,500,000 salary)
15th Overall
for
Cam Ward (1 more year @ $6,800,000 salary)
Alex Semin (3 more years @ $7,000,000 salary)
5th Overall
35th Overall
Flames then pick:
5th
35th
45th
52nd
53rd
76th
83rd
etc.....
That's a lot of money though just to move up 10 spots and also grab 35th overall (27.8 - 4.5 = $23.3 million)
Give Semin one year with the team to rejuvenate his career with a change of scenery, and if he can't then a buy out next spring would only take $2.3 cap space for 4 years.
Ward would be a 1A/1B with Ortio.
Meh, I really wish one of these types of cap space/money deals would go down so we can all finally see what one actually looks like, and what kind of value taking on money/bad contracts actually has.

Definitely not enough as a mid 1st isn't a guaranteed impact player. You don't want to take on that boat anchor contract for a guy that could be the next Sven Baertschi.

I'm not sure Ronnie Francis in his 2nd year as GM is going to give up 5th OA under any circumstances. I can see Ward for Hiller with a pick upgrade in the 2nd or 3rd rounds but nothing more than that.
Semin would have to convince Treliving and Hartley that he'd be willing to commit to the team game the Flames succeed with before they'd okay a Semin trade to CGY.
I want Semin on the Flames but he needs to buy in fully or not at all.

Well, if you believe the "rumors" Francis almost gave up the 7th overall just a couple months on the job last year....and that was supposedly not to move down (like my above scenario), just straight up give the pick away for money.
I agree though, highly unlikely to happen.
I would be more than happy to upgrade picks in a Hiller/Ward swap though, if that's possible....and I too wouldn't complain if Flames management took a gamble on Semin here, at the same time getting a future in return for the risk. If he doesn't pan out, there are plenty of options...and if he actually turned it around, he'd be one heck of a sniper for Johnny or Bennett to feed the puck to for a few years.

Which LW?
Semin is a RH RW.

I'd love to see if Semin worked out in CGY. But...
Folks want to hang Raymond from the bridge nightly and he makes half od what Semin does. Imagine the hate...
I believe Francis entertained the idea last year. But I think he got smart and kept the pick.

Not only that, but what about cap space if the experiment fails? Such a big hit for so long

I would take on Alex's contract if it meant we could get Crouse, Marner, or Provorov.

Spitballing here but if the rumours are right and smid won't play again, wonder if we can do a Clarkson for Horton type deal and make it work to our advantage. We throw in Raymond as well to shed that deal but LA gains cap relief with Smid on ltir. Something like
Raymond
Smid
15 overall
For
13 overall
Richards
2nd rounder in 2015
We gain a couple of spots in the first round and pick up a second rounder. LA takes on Raymond's deal which expires before Richards and gain cap relief with Smid. Probably not enough from our perspective but thought I'd float it out there.

That's an interesting proposition. I'd say not enough from our perspective to take on Richards' contract. Of course I am biased but I would like LA to overpay. What if it was one of our 2nds going the other way instead of our first and they kept their second but added a prospect? Too much from LA?
