The elevator door thing is clearly contextual.

You're alone on an elevator in a non-busy building and one other person is three strides away when the door starts closing? Don't be a d-bag - hold it open.

You and nine people are in a elevator in a busy office building among a bank of six elevators, and a trickle of people are still trying to get on? No need to hold it.

Plus some elevators have an alarm that go off if the door is open too long.

I guess I don't understand how it's okay to make me wait while someone gets to the elevator, but not okay to make that same person just wait for the next one? Sometimes, you have to wait for the elevator. It's the adult version of having to wait your turn.

And I don't go out of my way not to hold the doors. I just don't go out of my way to hold them.

The difference is you have to wait like five seconds for them to get on. They may have to wait a couple minutes for the next elevator. It'll average out to less waiting for the two of you if you wait for them to get on. Plus it's just considerate.

I take my shoes off in the office. I don't walk around or anything, but sorry, my feet get hot and I like to take them off from time to time.

We have the completely horrible elevator card access that directs you to specific elevators. If I'm on and a new floor lights up I'm holding the door. I'm going to have to stop at the floor anyway so might as well have the occupant on the elevator.

It may be considerate to the one person walking to the elevators, but it is rude and inconsiderate to all the people already in the elevator. Why is the one person on the outside more important than the multiple people on the inside, especially if it's near capacity? Most buildings I've been in have multiple high speed elevators, especially work buildings. The next elevator door is often opening as one shuts.

Plus, what if I've already been waiting several minutes? Why should my wait be prolonged? And what of the people who are up on the upper floors waiting to come down? Why should their wait be prolonged?

... anyways, all irrelevant to my argument. The main reason why I don't go out of my way to hold the doors is because I relish that bit of time to myself before work.

We noticed this too...then we went to Hong Kong and I swear it was completely different and back to zigging and zagging again. I blame the British.

If I see someone go into an elevator and I am at the point that I can hurry for it, I will usually intentionally straggle behind and just catch the next one. I hate being a burden on others, no matter how small.

One social convention specific to CP that I don't follow are "jihad" types of threads (unless it is Flames related somehow). Sorry, I won't help you win. How do I know the other people don't deserve it just as much or more?

How about this one, when you see someone running for the bus do you tell the driver about it? I always sit near the back of the bus, and often see people trying to chase it down. I said something once or twice, but to no effect. So I've basically given up on that practice since I'm just wasting my voice.

Probably a post more appropriate for the WRGMG thread, but I can't stand it when people run for the bus from some distance and the bus driver does stop/wait...and the person stops running.

The bus driver's already being nice, run those last 10 steps fatty!

So you have spent this whole time coming up with arguments about saving other peoples' time (including those on other floors) to justify the fact that you want the elevator for yourself?

I was responding to other people posting about being rude and self centred because I didn't hold the doors to spare others the time of having to wait. I responded to that not understanding why their time is more worthy of being saved than anyone else's, mine included. That is why we were discussing it from the perspective of time.

I very clearly stated in my original post, however, that my main purpose for not going out of my way to hold doors was to have the elevator to myself.

Oh man, you just reminded me of mass embarrassment. In the winter I was running for the bus. People were getting off, so I could have made it. I got to the back door, slipped on ice and face planted. Then the door shut, the bus drove off spraying me with slush... I almost turned around and went home. Some days aren't meant to be faced.

You don't find these elevators really efficient? They take some getting used to but why not have everyone going to the 23rd floor get on the same elevator? For someone as impatient as me, i like it.

Just so i'm clear if you're in traffic jam and eventually approach a spot that someone from a parking lot is waiting to join into traffic, you wouldn't let them in? Has anyone ever let you in?

Has anyone ever held the elevator for you and sort of made your day?

Amen. I do this too. I get so annoyed when people whine about it when they notice. Do you want me to be at my desk with cool, non stinky feet, in socks...

or in shoes with hot, smelly ass feet? You pick.

What relevance does what I would do in a traffic jam hold in a conversation about holding/not holding an elevator door for someone? Just so I'm clear.

Have I ever let anyone in? Sure. Has anyone let me in? Sure. Has anyone held a door for me? Sure. Did it make my day? No. It was nice, I thanked them. It didn't ultimately have any bearing on my day, just like if they hadn't held the door, it would have no bearing on my day.

Do you burst into to tears if the door isn't held for you? Does it ruin your entire day having to wait a couple minutes when you miss the elevator?

I get it, you think I'm evil, rude, self centred, whatever. Next time I'm in the elevator, I'll take a minute to make my peace with it.
