I think the only real elevator etiquette is to not fart in one.

Not holding the door open for someone isn't rude. 75% of the time I reach an elevator, it's usually because I just arrived at a destination from a trip and I have to pee. So I don't want to waste any of my time getting to the room to relieve myself by holding the door open for someone. Wait for the next one.

I guess standing too close to someone in an uncrowded elevator might be a etiquette thing too, but it's not rude per se. Unless you are touching them.

For me, I don't mind zig zag'rs. I walk fast too.

When I was in China it took me a couple days to learn that I just have to walk straight and people will get out of my way. I'm 6'3", so pretty much bigger than everyone there. The first couple days of trying to zig zag through the crowds got pretty frustrating until I figured it out.

You don't have to face the corner. Just walk straight in and look at the back of the elevator as if it's the front. Best is if you're with another person, and you carry on talking as though nothing is different.

To answer if I must, yeah I actually do, or at least until the train driver comes over the intercom and gets mad or the elavator makes that "take you finger of the door open button" noise.

Not just the guys that let the ladies get on the elevator first, the worst is the ones that just have to be last in the elevator and win the courtesy war.

In my old building, I was on the third floor, the first stop of the elevator (the stairs were locked from the bottom, so I couldn't take them). Therefore, I always tried to stay back in the elevator bay, so I'd get on last, making my exit easy. But then there'd be that guy that just stands there with his arm raised, insisting he goes in last. 8 seconds later, it's the elevator shuffle so I can get past and off first.

While I won't go that far, living in an apartment building with three inconsistent elevators, I will definitely hold the elevator door open, even if that person is grabbing the mail (probably a little too courteous, i know).

I have had to wait for those elevators for a long time, and if i just miss one because someone didn't hold the door as I do that awkward jog from the entrance, I would be extremely annoyed.

Yeah you have to wait an extra 5 seconds, but that person will have to wait another 5 minutes. It's pretty rude and self-centered. Unfortunately we all deal with the narcissism epidemic

That's a slightly different case.
I hate it when people hold up the train for someone or blocks the sensor, when there's another train right behind it. Throws the whole system off.

Elbows on table is another. I am weirdly aware of it though. I will put them on the table and then I can hear my mom's voice in my head saying, get your elbows off the table. But I ignore her as best I can, because I still like to rebel against my parents even though I'm in my 30s.

Someone I used to work with was claustrophobic and had real issues riding in a full elevator. I would block for her all the time, she would get in, I'd block the door and tell everyone waiting that the elevator was full. Got a lot of glares for that.

Ya, please don't do that. The train ends up missing the light, then the one behind gets bunched up and the whole system suffers. There is a reason the driver gets mad. You just screwed it up for everyone, instead of 1 person missing the train, everyone suffers.

Well no kidding, I get what you're doing, but it's the blatant lie of "Elevator's full" that would irritate me if I was busy and saw an empty elevator and some dude making a BS claim as the door closed,

On the other hand you're a good guy for helping her out with a social disorder as those can be downright debilitating. So I'm not sure what to think.

It's not like you can say "Hey, this lady has a social disorder so I'm helping her" as that would make things worse for her. So basically you're making yourself look like a dick to save her from embarrassment and anxiety, which is pretty awesome, actually.

yeah, didn't really care what everyone else thought. There were 7 other elevators in the bank, not like they had to wait a whole bunch.

Self centred and rude? Never been called that before. Fun. Oh, and part of a narcissistic epidemic?! Goodness.

Does it change at all if the elevator is partially full or almost full? You expect everyone on that elevator to wait for someone? And frankly, in busier offices, there's always going to be one more person. We waited for that guy, but now there's a chick a couple seconds away from getting on. Well, now she's on, but there's that guy.

Why is it self centred to say, "you didn't make it?" It's not like I spit in the guys face, kicked him in the nuts and pushed him off the elevator. There are other elevators and this one will come back down too. You can wait. And no, I don't care if someone doesn't hold the elevator for me. Such is life.

Lots of people do this. I have a mobility scooter (like a rascal). I bought it off a CPer. I'm not disabled, though. I just like cruising around on it and particularly like riding it to and from the bar.

People are ridiculously nice to me when I'm on it. They hold doors for me. If I cruise around Safeway with it the cashier will come around and put my groceries in the little basket in the front. People smile at me with this pleasant, pitying look. Cars will stop for me to let me cross the street even if I'm not at a corner. It's all very nice.
