I don't really buy the "Deepness" of this draft. I get it in the first round.. But I mean people are saying you will be drafting guys in the 50's who usually go in the 30's that just seems ridiculous.

So beyond your gut feeling what do you base this post on?

Nothing obviously just in my mind its ridiculous and I guess time will tell. But I will be monitoring the draft and hopefully being able to see how the 2nd and 3rd round plays out compared to history.

I take note of 2003 being a noted deep draft and there were 4 NHL all stars drafted in the 2nd round.

Mind you this is all talk for another thread and is off topic. Don't mean to de-rail the thread

When people refer to the depth of this draft they aren't suggesting it's like 2003. 2015 has plenty of quality players going into the third round, it's deep on nice pieces, not deep on star quality like 2003 was. It's not that far fetched at all.

Last year, 2014, was pretty thin. It's why you saw teams take more overage players then usual. The Flames took Carroll in the 7th round. Hunter Smith was technically an overage player but only by a day, doesn't count in this exercise. The Oilers for example had 4 of their 6 picks as overage guys.

2015 isn't deep on star players but it's deep on good potential quality guys. A guy ranked early in the 2nd round might be equal to a guy late in the third. It's not all that ridiculous at all.

Everything that I have read about the 2015 mean good things, and I mean good things as in not only is the top 10 deep, but so are the top 90.

As a Flames' fan, I am quite stoked at the fact that we have 6 top 90 picks in this draft. Imo, it's the draft that I think will be looked back at in a few years as one of the most successful drafts we've done (aside from 2011 of course). That's just my bold prediction.

I'm not sure there will be any draft better than 2003, but I have a feeling 2015 will be one of the best drafts in this decade (2010-20).

I plugged this in the other 2015 NHL Draft thread, but figured it could use a mention here as well so that no one misses it.

For those looking to subscribe to FC's 2015 NHL Draft Guide, there's a CP discount over in this thread: http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?p=5314169

Now, back to draft talk...

This truly is the best draft guide going in terms of value for dollars. They do an amazing job. Well worth the 15.00 (that's with the CP discount)

I just saw a tweet by Calgary Flames regarding this kid Kyle Connor, ranked 13th in 2015 NHL Draft.

http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=768968

Looks like a good prospect. Just won the USHL Player of the Year and very good in playing both ends. He is going to University of Michigan.

Having a closer look, and I would guess the following 10 players will almost assuredly be taken before spot #15:
McDavid, Eichel, Hainfin, Strome, Marner, Barzal, Crouse, Rantanen, Provorov, Werenski
Taking these guys off the board, we are left with the following likely options by position:
LD: Zboril, Chabot, Kylington
RD: J.Roy
C: Connor, Zacha, White
RW: Meier, Konecny, Merkley, Sprong
LW: Svechnikov
There's something to like with all of these guys. Meier is probably the best, but will also likely be gone by 15.
I think I'd prefer to take a chance on Kylington here. Sounds like he has the highest ceiling of this bunch.

I think BPA is the way to go at all costs, but if three guys are the same based on their "ledges" then I still wouldn't go to organization need.

I'd go to asset value.

And centers have more asset value going forward. If you get a Ryan O'Reilly out of the 15th pick then you have a huge asset to trade, always go center or RD if you have a tied up ledge.

Button's final list is rather interesting:

He has Barzal and Rantanen at 15-16

Hanafin at 12?!?!?!?!?! Kylington at 47???? Geez! If Hanafin is there after 10, we do what we can to move up and get him.

I'm extremely surprised at these rankings... I guess that shows you how deep this draft is. There are some players people ranked in the first round that others have in the second. I think it's a great year to have this many picks but they also have a lot of value if we want to trade up.

So excited for the draft!!! What day is it, I can't remember at all.

I find his lists so odd. Kudos for him for going out of the norm and giving his reasoning behind it though.

If Rantanen is there at 15 that would be amazing. Big, skilled RW who can compliment our offence we are building - sign me up!
Use the bevy of #2/#3 round picks to take a few shots at defenceman to develop

So, riot if we pick the Russian goalie in the first round?

Using Button's list, trading up 3 spaces for Hanafin and pulling Kylington at 45 would be pretty epic.

Edit : add to that Carlo at 52.

I love his lists.

They're an honest ranking of how he sees the prospects, 1-100. Button's list is a nice juxtaposition to Mckenzie's list, who ranks guys based on interviews with scouts and other hockey people.

I have a feeling the Stars would much rather pick Hanafin at 12 rather than listen to trades given defense is an area of need with the club.
