Every coach is going to get long term contracts now. Essentially you will get a draft pick when you fire your coach.

I like it -- the guy won a lot of games (and a Stanley Cup) in Pittsburgh, and not always in ideal circumstances.

Is Tim Murray outside of the NHL Boys Club?

Seems like he's getting the short end of the stick a lot lately.

Sabres lose out on Babcock and McDavid. That's awesome.

And get Bylsma and Eichel, not really much of a lose.

No kidding, still plenty to be excited about

Plus the national media spotlight and enormous pressure is directed somewhere else.

Thats exactly it. The term ensures compensation.

Except when the fired coach decides to enjoy his guaranteed paychecks and take it easy for a while. Maybe go on TV.

Of when you give a 5 year contract that will never have another NHL coaching job.

The national media spotlight and pressure are always directed away from Buffalo. Along with sunshine, happiness, smiles, excitement, fun, etc.

McDavid and Babcock would have been great but Eichel and Blysma aren't chopped liver and Sabres fans should have a lot to be excited about. Meanwhile McDavid is going to the worst organization in professional sports and Babcock is going to the most toxic environment in the NHL. Eichel and Blysma could very well turn out the big winners here.

Whoa now, I like Eichel and Bylsma probably more than most and think the Sabres and Murray should stop being whiny little bitches about it but lets not say things we cant take back!

Its still Buffalo.

Except being perpetually wet by their GM's tears. I hear moisture-associated skin damage (MASD) is a bitch.

I wouldn't take a 3rd or lower rounder just to fire Hartley and him going to another team. For Treliving and Burke, sure.

Not so sure Byslma is all that's cracked up to be. He had Crosby, Malkin, and a lot more arsenal with the Pens for so many years and won it only once when he first took over. He's like a one hit wonder and he's probably lucky to have won it since that coaching change sparked that team late in the season. The Pens could've won it with another coach and maybe more than just one cup in a weak conference for the longest time. Heck, even Ted Nolan could've won it with that group of Pens that year.

Right now, Buffalo is in the same situation that Edmonton was in for the past 10 years or so. I think Edmonton will turn it around this year while Buffalo still have bad management, a one-dimensional coach, and a young team with no direction. They'll be the new No-Good Oilers.

Edmonton is much further ahead than Buffalo as they have been rebuilding for a decade while the Sabres are on what year three of their rebuild so it shouldn't surprise anyone if Edmonton has success sooner. I wouldn't say Blysma is a top head coach in the league but he's at least better than half the head coaches in the league. I didn't like how Blysma handled things in the playoffs but maybe some have forgotten that there were a few seasons where Malkin and Crosby took turns being out for long stretches and that team kept winning despite being held together by duct tape. IMO he did his best work when the lineup was missing it's best players so maybe he's the perfect coach to bring out the best in a young team that doesn't have established stars.

With all the outrage over the rule, I'm pretty sure they'll revisit the rule and void the draft picks due, not unlike the Devils getting their first round pick back for circumventing the cap.

I don't think management is so disposable. Fire Burke and Treliving and you're likely to end up with someone worse. Personally, I think the position of GM is important and not worth a 10% shot at a good player while ending up with another Craig Button.
