In Aus if you wear a hat into an RSL (Returned Servicemens League, similar the the Legion) you are expected to buy a round for everyone at the bar.

My father-in-law is so anal about hats at the dinner table that when we eat outside at the cabin, he makes us our hats off.

I typically make a point of wearing a hat at my dinner table every chance I get, my house, my rules.

Good on you. Stick it to the man
Yes, of course. It's not punishment, it's the nature of the business. Tips are performance based rewards. Every server feels like they're entitled to them because they work in an industry with an archaic pay-model that struggles so hard it relies on it's customers to pay it's staff anything close to something reasonable.

I'm generally a very good tipper (probably too good), and put myself through university partially by working in the restaurant industry......and yet, like yourself, I love going places overseas where tipping isn't a custom. LOVE it. Just removes some of the awkwardness/complexity from what should be a simple transaction.

Hats are traditionally outdoor wear, and used to be associated with work. So sweaty, greasy, dusty. You took them off for the same reason you took your work boots off when you came in a house. Keeping a hat on at the table meant you didn't care about social niceties like cleanliness, and you just wanted to scarf down food like some kind of an animal.

Exactly like the shoes in the house thing.

What I don't get is why anyone wants to wear a hat indoors. Cover up a bald patch?

Hair is usually pretty messed up from wearing a hat. If I put on a hat I usually will make a point of not taking it off at all if I can. I will take it off for the national anthem... that's about it though.

I wouldn't wear a hat to a formal dinner. I also wouldn't take off my hat for a casual dinner.

What if the social convention at Flames games was to wear red (specifically a Flames jersey) but no hats?

That would be stupid and I'd probably wear a hat.

That would suck.

If it was a hard fast rule like wearing red for playoffs than I probably just wouldn't wear a hat.

Wait you know that it isn't a rule that you wear red correct? It is a rule as much as standing for the anthem or taking your hat off at the table or any other number of societal convention.

Yeah but I don't personally view wearing a hat at a casual dinner as disrespectful. If this no hat in C of Red rule had logic behind it I'd follow it.

I don't sing "Happy Birthday". That song is bar-none the most annoying thing on the planet.

Default Manners/Social Conventions You Don't Follow

Perhaps not a social norm but I refuse to walk on the left side of a sidewalk, hall or walkway. I apply generally accepted driving measures such as shoulder checking if I deviate from a straight path and I won't come to a sudden stop without checking if people are behind me. In cases where a person is walking straight toward me - I'll still take the right hand side.

People that turn in front of me to get into their store get clipped by my shopping bag if they don't time it right. I'm not changing my pace if you're not bright enough to scoot out of the way or considerate enough to wait for a others to go along their way.

Moms with strollers are the worst.

I've been to several funerals lately and no one wears black any more. Or suits. I've gone from black suit to suit no jacket, to jeans and a nice dress shirt and was still fairly over dressed. Lots of people in shorts, hats, t shirts.

I've never been to a funeral that casual. And I was at one 2 weeks ago. Are you thinking of a memorial service maybe?
