Sabres hire Dan Bylsma as head coach
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Sounds like dispute/clarity over draft pick compensation is one of the few things holding up the Sabres hiring Bylsma. Can't be deal breaker
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
On last RT, compensation issue, at least temporarily, may be gumming up works on Bylsma/BUF. Rule is rule but there are often complications.

Teams shouldn't get compensation for a guy they fired. They should just be happy they don't have to pay him anymore.

Apparently the issue is that Pittsburgh didn't ask for compensation for Shero, and Buffalo is scoffing that they are asking for compensation for Bylsma.

I don't get this either, you fired the guy and get a draft pick AND don't have to pay him anymore.

Agreed the rule is dumb for fired execs.
But as a GM you would be stupid not to demand the compensation. A free pick is a free pick.

Tim Murray is such a damn crybaby.
"It's not fair we didn't get McDavid. We tanked harder and deserved it"
"Mike Babcock didn't accept my offer and didn't tell me before he accepted a different one"

I thought the draft pick was so that teams get compensated when someone (Calgary) steals someone (Treliving) that is currently working for their team. Not so they can demand a draft pick for a coach they fired 2 years ago.
I don't blame GMs for taking advantage of it, but they need to change this rule cause it's dumb.

I can see hiring a fired GM requiring compensation, especially if he was fired within the current draft year. He would have intimate knowledge of his old team's draft analysis, scouting, etc. He could take that and help his new team immensely. That has to be worth something.
A coach that was fired at the end of 13/14? Give me a break. The way this new system is playing out, the only way a team will be able to hire anyone without paying a draft pick is by hiring a rookie.
Say Babcock is fired in 4 years and is hired by a new team 3 years later when he still has one year left on his deal. Would the team hiring him still be required to give the Leafs a pick? If yes, that is completely asinine.

The thing about NHL and sports in general when it comes to firing coaches and executives as that when they get fired they are still often under contract, just not doing the job they were contracted to do anymore. Its not like if you or I got fired, if we fired, we fired! No more job, no more pay! But these guys still get paid even if they are "fired". So since they are still under contract with a team I sort of understand why the team would want to compensated - they are giving up contractual control over the situation and they want to get some benefit for that. Now does the NHL have to complicate it so much with this steadfast rule of a 3rd round pick - no. The rule needs to be changed and just like all contracts & the the buying out of contracts, it should be negotiated for that specific situation.

IMO, compensation should only be given if you are promoting someone from a different team.
IE, we took the AGM from PHX and made him our GM. I get paying for that as he could have very well been in their succession plans. Or taking an Asst Coach/AHL Coach and making him your HC while they are still working for the other team.
But you fire a guy, you fire him. You give up all rights to him as an employee.

Doesn't seem right to have to forfeit a 3rd round pick to hire an unemployed (still getting paid but not working in the NHL) coach.

Kevin Lowe is a genius after all. He found another way to get draft picks...fire coaches and GMs yearly and something is bound to pay off.

Let's fire everyone. I'm sure Hartley, Burke and Trei will find work somewhere. Free picks!

Is there an advanced stat in hockey for Wins above Replacement coach, WARGM, or WARP.
Another Gaudreau, Brodie, and Ferland is certainly worth more wins than our current coach, GM, and President.

We'll sometimes the fired employee is working for the team in another capacity.
Wasn't Dallas Eakins working as a pro scout after he got fired as the head coach last year?

Buffalo Sabres @BuffaloSabres
Murray says Pittsburgh gets a 3rd round pick in 2016 - though not our 3rd round pick - as compensation for Bylsma hire. #WelcomeDan
