Seems like the flames want to go to after a play that has the skill and size, and that can also have a two-way game, with good production inputs.

Two traits are universally sought after, though.

Skill and size.

“We’re looking for skill, speed, character, hockey sense,” Button said. “I think it’s universal throughout the league what teams look for. It’s broken down differently but you can never have enough skill. I know we were the seventh-highest scoring team and that speaks to it. You need skill. You need players that can play in multiple situations so that speaks to versatility. The bigger the better.

Size is important if they go along with the skating and the skill, but the most important thing is we want to get as high a quality of player we can get and to me that means skill and offensive production.”

That is very good news.

Skill should always be first. You can always find depth forwards for cheap (see Jooris, Ferland). That is part of the reason why Detroit and Tampa are so good.

Is that better than 15+45? I think so, but really depends on how far back a team wants to go.

Maybe... But do the oilers have time to draft a guy that's probably two years away from being on the team? I could see them using that 16th overall pick to trade for someone who is NHL-ready. Maybe on a goalie like Gibson or a defenseman who ican actually play defence. The oilers are on the clock now more than ever to get better fast. And I mean a whole lot better really fast... Not that I think they will of course. Pretty sure Hall, eberle, and RNH will be upcoming UFAs when McDavid is finishing his ELC and will be looking for his big contract. All this "talent" that the oilers have been handed by the league will be dispersing out when that happens. Suddenly... It will be McDavid all by himself in 3 years. Unless of course their plan is to just keep replenishing their ranks with first overall picks for another 5 years..

He has a Roman Hamrlik feel to him, which is exactly the type of defenseman the Flames need.

I heard they are looking for pygmies with stumps for hands, don't play defence, and are giant d-bags. Oh and low hockey iq is a plus.

Not a fan of drafting D @15. Not in my control but other than Kylington, really not too high on the others in that spot. I feel like the Flames can get more hits going D-centric in the 2nd round with the amount of D in that 45-53 range. Players like Gabriel Carlsson, Jacob Larsson, Noah Juulsen, Matthew Sencer and Rasmus Andersson are all good prospects.

That and I'm really umped on the likes of Svechnikov and Konecny or Harkins or Connor.

Only draw back for me on Connor is he's headed to the NCAA but it's not that bad of a thing as the Flames can afford to let him develop there.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. We will need quality guys to come in after, especially if we are forced to deal off guys down the road.

Isn't that the Oilers' method? Would explain a lot.

Agreed, I'd slot him down a bit because of it but wouldn't cry about it if they took him.

Got a real thing for Svechnikov though. Smart, Big, Skilled, Fast, Driven to succeed at all costs. Ticks every single box the Flames have on their card.

I think the Flames interview at the combine should just be placing each potential pick in a room with an adorable puppy. If they do anything but snuggle that puppy, don't draft them.

It is so difficult because there are 25 really good players in this draft and you could make solid arguments for each and every one of them for why you'd take them.

For me, it's any of the top 12 that fall followed by Connor, Chabot, Zboril, Svechnikov in some order (that almost changes daily) and then guys like Sprong and Kylington that have the talent with warts.

I doubt the Oilers try to move up. They will use the picks (16+33) to improve their current roster if anything.
