Oshie would require a 1st I think. Maybe one could be acquired from another team and then packaged to STL? Oshie would look very good on this team IMO

13 million? Ward and Semin as a package? And ward was the guy they REALLY liked.
EDIT: Just listened to that part, Two separate trades bringing in 13 million.

No, they were different deals with two different teams.
The rumours from the draft floor were Ribeiro ($5.5 million cap hit) and Arizona's first, and Ward ($6.3 million cap hit) and Carolina's first.
It's not quite $13 million in cap space, but it would have been $12.3 million in real dollars this season, and $12.8 million next season.

Yeah I made that post just before I actually got to listening to Burkie's interview. Great interview.

Ribeiro blocked the move I think, or at least refused to come.

Ugh. I wish I could forget about those rumored deals and how they fell through.
7th overall and 12th overall from last years draft added to the fold?
Two of Fleury or Nylander, or Ehlers or Ritchie or Fiala or Perlini or Sanheim etc, etc anyone?
F U Mike Ribiero, and whoever backed out from Carolina's side.

The Flames were aggressive pre-draft. Offered to take on Mike Ribeiro for 12th pick (Ribeiro wouldn't waive). Ultimately, he was bought out.

If those two deals were finalized (Ward and Ribeiro) as they are speculated, I wonder whether or not the Flames would have made the playoffs. Would Ward be as good as Hiller was for us?
Does Ribeiro's attitude and off-ice issues poison the locker room chemistry? Pick 7 and 12 would be nice, but Ribeiro would be playing for us for the next 4 years.
I wouldn't mind Ward, but Ribeiro scares the crap out of me. He set himself straight for Nashville, but that's only because Phoenix bought him out and publicly ripped him to shreds.

Ribeiro actually mentioned in an interview that he did not want to go to a place where the spotlight would be on him (i.e. hockey crazed city), because he needed to sort out his personal life. IIRC, those comments came out after he was bought out by Phoenix

That would have been a draft for the ages for us: 4th overall (Bennett), 7th overall (Fleury / Ritchie?) and 12th overall (Perlini) all in the same draft?

I highly doubt Ribiero would have poisoned the locker room. He had some personal demons but I don't think he was ever such a distraction that the team was affected to that extent. You could make a bigger case for Ward but even him I think given a new life and opportunity he would have stepped up much like Hiller did. It's not like Hiller was lights out even. Worst case scenario though I would take Hayden Fleury and Brendan Perlini over playoffs if that was ultimately what happened. Even in that scenario I think the team still would have played well and have been in the hunt no matter what.

I know these are just numbers to us since it is someone else's money. But imagine being an owner and you give the ok to buyout Ribeiro. You are writing a $12mm cheque (actually 6x$2mm) for the 12th overall pick. That is what either the coyotes owners or the flames were going to do. Pre-tax, but still. That is a big bloody number for a draft pick that could be a dud. Hat tip to Calgary owners for offering to pay for that.

I'm not 100% certain that they would have bought Ribeiro out, when I think about it.

I think this could be the year that cap space is finally monetized. First year without compliance buyouts, if i remember correctly.

Problem is that we're going to be dealing with our own potential cap issues the following season (2016-17)....
