i dont think ita a question of whether the flames want to sign jank by next offseason. its all up to him if he thinks he should head somewhere else.

I used to think the Flames should go with the 2nd but the kid really impressed me during the ncaa tourney. If I had to pick now I'd take janko. A lot of you guys are out to lunch on the value of a 2nd round pick though. There's 5-10 guys from most draft years I'd take over Jankowski, I agree he has a pretty high floor but he can still bust outright . Some posters are acting like he's a sure thing for the bottom 6 in a couple years..

Neither do I either, some of those clips of Jankowski look pretty skilled to me. I was just going off of whats said here though and just wondering what others thoughts might be of him vs a 2nd rounder, thats all.

This is true but I was replying to the comment that the best you can hope for with a 2nd round pick is Granlund or Wotherspoon which I don't believe is true. A lot of quality players are selected in the 2nd round.

Well the evidence is there to support a claim that Jankowski is on track for a solid role on the Flames. In my mind if Jankowski was going to be a bust he'd have been a ghost in the frozen four and not show any improvement over his three years. None of which is true. His development curve is long, and we're just starting to see things come to fruition. Which is a far ways off from bust territory.

And I don't think next year is do or die for him either. As it's been well documented by both sides of the argument in this thread the last couple of days that Providence is tracking a bit downward. If Jankowski has no one to pass to of any value or worth, he is going to be hard pressed to produce much offensively. As long as he keeps being a dominant force in the faceoff circle and round out his 200 ft game he'll be fine.

Button reportedly really liked Kucherov as well and we almost took him

Just pointing that out to make the thread more frustrating for everyone

Yep, they had Kucherov and Gaudreau unranked on their draft lists and considered as "wildcards", allowing them to make the call if the timing felt right.

On top of this comment, having extra picks allows may allow for scouts to pick pet projects or high risk/high reward picks, like Gaudreau or Kucherov as mentioned above... there could be some huge rewards for having that extra 2nd round pick.

If he has a high floor, by definition he can't be a bust.

Given the rest of the sentence, I think he meant to say high *ceiling*, not floor.

From what I've seen of Janko, I think he has the tools to be ahead of Mony. He has great skating ability, great hockey IQ, and he's in a defensive system to teach him all the good responsible habits.

I know this isn't a Monahan thread but personally I think what we've seen out of Mony is his peak.

Because players always peak at 20 years old.

Yep, for sure. Second season in the NHL, 20 years old, couldn't possibly be anything left to learn, no more room to grow. Hopefully everyone enjoyed Monahan's ascent to the top of the his growth potential as a player.

It was a fun ride. It was a much shorter trip than Crosby, Gretzky, Getzlaf, Kane, Towes etc, which in itself is very impressive for Sean, but I'm just glad we got to see him at his peak this season and use it for an unexpected playoff run.

Anyways, now that Jankowski will be the new Monahan and Sean has nowhere to go but down, maybe we could grab a 2nd for him before other teams figure out he's peaked?

Hovering around 30 goals might be his peak, maybe he hits 35 a couple seasons but his overall game is still not even close to peaking. If you're talking about point totals only, maybe... maybe I get what you're saying but still don't agree. The rest of his game? Not even close to peaking.

Jankowski will hopefully be a compliment to our big two franchise players down the middle.

I don't see how Monahan could be peaking at age 20, but this should set the cat among the pigeons and give this thread a few more pages.

It's interesting that although Monahan and Jankowski were one draft year apart, their birthdays are less than 1 month apart.

I kind of agree that I always pictured Monahan as hovering around at or above 30 goals in his prime. But he's clearly improving and going to get better defensively, on faceoffs (I think he's going to be really good one day), and in overall game management.

Plus, he still had off periods offensively this year, until Hartley pulled him aside, (and also when he hit 29 goals) so he could have been even better production-wise.

Not to mention he's money in the shoot out. While not a huge thing, those extra points are nothing to sneeze at. It's part of the game.
