I actually find the full recline makes space issue worse in most seats, and I end up less comfortable. I usually recline about 1/3 of full recline as it is enough to let me sleep. Non-reclining seats pitched back more would be fine with me.

As a 6'1" guy myself I've never noticed an appreciable lack of knee space when someone reclines. Laptop space, sure. But not knee space at the bottom of the seat that doesn't move. Maybe you guys should stop slouching so much and use the recline feature to lean back instead?

I really dont see why this is such an issue. I fly all the time (50k *A elite), and it doesn't bother me in the slightest if people recline. I also fully comprehend the airlines motivations to make as much money as possible by utiling space, ehich is their right. Thats why i wont fly Air Transat, and pay more because of it. If it made people THAT uncomfortable no one would fly.
If you don't like the seating arrangement, upgrade your seat. It's not breaking the bank to go to premium economy. I just don't get why people drive down airfare to the lowest possible price, and then complain about their seating environment. Was there a gun to your head when you booked AC Rouge to Vegas at $350 return? You get what you pay for.

Question:
The seats recline and are intended to be used to recline. However, the seats are also designed to allow the person behind to grab the top and push it back into the upright position.
Is it not then the right of the person behind to move the seat back up just as much as it is the person in front to recline?

I just don't understand the issue. If the person in front of you reclines, you can recline your seat and have the same amount of space you had before. If you have a laptop, put it on top of your lap. If this is too much trouble, then upgrade to a superior seat - be it an exit row, premium economy, or business class seat.
Cathay Pacific has seats that don't actually recline in economy and they are fine on a short haul but terrible on a trans-pacific flight. CX is a great airline, but that is one thing they do that misses the mark.
EDIT: CX has actually moved away from the non-recline seat to a more traditional reclining seat in long-haul economy, which is good news:

I personally don't recline because the minimial increase in comfort it provides is vastly lower than the negative impact it has on the person behind me.
Sure, I'll agree you have the right to recline. I just choose not too cause I don't want to make the already crappy flight, worse for the person behind me.
I'm 5'10 though so the whole world is designed for me. It's awesome.

Negative. For tall people such as myself, its the knee thing. If I'm not first class or exit row, a reclined seat bangs into my knees. I find McDougall Douglas planes to be the worst for leg room. For other people, the reclined seat affects their laptops.
If you notice my earlier posts, I never whined about it. Yes you have the right to recline. I just don't like it when people do it to me, so I don't do it to others.

This is exactly what I do. Whenever I fly to Chicago I always fly United and get the economy plus. They say there is extra leg room but what I like it most people are too cheap to upgrade so I either end up with a row to myself or an empty middle seat at the worst.

I recline, and have no issue with the person ahead of me reclining.
Reclining only sucks if you are in front of the crappers.

Reclining is on combated by reclining yourself. What if the person behind me has stuff out on the tray table?
I don't know, I personally just don't care to do it.

You know the tray table is attached to the seat and self-adjusts to the reclining of the seat to which it is attached.
Flying sucks, a lot of planes are tighter with less leg room, and tighter seats (or my ass is growing), if I can make if more comfortable hell yeah, beep beep I am coming back.

Yes. Try having a laptop opened if the person ahead of you reclines.

The Horror.....
Never ever have I had anyone complain, in fact I have never heard a complaint around me, be it a short hop to Mulletville from Calgary or a long haul to South Africa.

Truth. If you show airlines that all you care about is price, how can you be surprised when you get cheap flights that are lacking in every other way?

It's a good thing the seat belt sign will be on if the turbulence is going to cause you to lose balance. But if you're going to elbow someone in the head because they don't want you making life uncomfortable for them, then how selfish can you be?

Ok... So why don't you just toughen up and sit upright like most other people on the plane? Oh right .... Your comfort.

Selfish? Haha that's funny.
It's nothing but responding to an a-hole like an a-hole.
Maybe you could try using your words instead of kicking the seat like a child?

Reclining in an airplane is the definition of selfish. I do ask people not to recline if they do it, but if they insist on being selfish, I won't be very nice to sit in front of. Maybe you could use your words instead of throwing an elbow like a dbag?

If your lower legs are longer, your knees are higher.
I can't even get a meal tray down. The height my knees are at, the seat definitely hits.
