You are comparing NA service and prices to Venice? There is your problem.

The guys who don't flush the toilet can go burn in heck. What are you, a mongrol? What kind of disease do you have that makes you think touching the handle is worse than everything else you just did, or that soap will not clean your hands.

Nah, that was the worst, but it wasn't the only place we went.

The thing I don't get about tipping is the fact that it's percentage based. Is the server's job that much harder if I order an expensive meal than it is if I order $5 worth of chicken wings and a couple drinks?

Doesn't make much sense to me. Should be based on quality of service, not how expensive your food was.

Ya, I always tip way more as a percentage on wings night, becuase the server constantly has to run back and forht between wings/empty baskets and drinks. Some people I go out with don't get it, but I feel bad.

Yeah I tip pretty big on wing night but mostly because we're regulars. They treat us awesome and we're kind of jackasses sometimes so I figure you gotta pay to play.

I am used to tipping now, but coming from Australia, where a tip is an optional gratuity, not a wage supplement, the whole phenomenon in north america confused me. So you pay your employees less, charge less on face value of the meal, and then rely on a customer to cover the shortfall in wages as an extra tax on their meal?
I'll make it clear that I tip. I tip a minimum of 10% (10% being crappy service). I generally tip 15-20% for servers, a loonie or so per drink order a bars, I tip my hair dresser 18%. I, unlike Mr. Pink, tip.

However, I agree with Mr. Pink that it is arbitrary. Why tip servers for good service and not for bank tellers? airline attendants? lawyers? doctors? because they earn enough?

So call it what it is, a wage supplement, but who else should get that? janitors don't make much and they have a ####tier job than servers. Why not tip the janitor when leaving a place? Why do taxi drivers expect tips now?

The whole structure of tipping is deeply flawed and as you said help suppress wages by making us either (a) feel guilty into tipping or (b) berate someone who does not wish to tip.

At the end of the day, tipping is optional. You are not forced to do it, yet we speak of it as a mandatory wage supplement.

So do the smart thing and get rid of tipping - have restaurants pay better wages (this would undoubtedly increase prices, but you pay that increase through tips anyway)...

How much of that actually goes to the driver ? I think it is a much better system if you just add a driver surcharge on the bill.
Yeah I don't get delivery usually because I am not going to just not tip the driver, and I don't want to add the delivery charge plus the tip to my bill. Although now even if you go for pickup, there is a tip option on the machine! Great gazooks!

I did that when I was a regular. You tip more in general because they pay attention to you more. You can always tip less if it was an off night or just chat them up to see what's going on and it usually resolves itself. Sometimes, you can't even pay to get good service, so truly show appreciation when you get it.

One thing my friends and wife (GF at time) do is low ball tip servers who half ass serving a table. Hear me out. A couple sits at a table. The waitress flirts with the guy expecting he will pay and tip more due to her... well endowed service in a tight shirt. Completely ignores the girl (as in, talks and serves guy pretty well all night and pretty much pretends pretends she isn't there). This happened a few times where I could get maybe 3-4 refills, my GF like 0-1 even though her cup is bone dry. GF grabs the bill and turns whatever shade she wants on the server tip wise and I turn a blind eye. I mean, I got a view and my GF got a butt in her face. Turn the tables and I would probably rage tip or zero tip too if I had a butt in my face.

We've done it with tables of like 5+ guys and 1-2 girls (usually evening drinks) where the girl is seriously being under served literally to the point of being ignored (as in, we as the guys have to ask for water, booze, cutlery etc. and give it to our friend since the level of bad service to our female friend while we guys receive good/great service; female asks for service, get it once with attitude, then completely ignored again). We consider it the law of averages. Tip should be average of table. If someone had an extremely negative experience while the rest positive, tip should reflect this average per person. Expect a woman scorned to give 0-5% and it seems like a completely justified tip for the entire table... or maybe we just don't want to be attacked by an angry friend for treating someone nicely who treated them poorly?

The worst thing is that 4 or 5 dollar delivery charges were introduced due to skyrocketing gas prices, but I certainly didn't see them drop when gas dropped.

And people say private business has our best interests at heart.

So for the toilet non flushers, I guess you'd be ok with people at your house dropping deuces and not flushing as well right? I always wondered what type of dirtbag does this, I guess now I know. You guys suck.

Just upper deck the next time you're at the house of someone who doesn't flush when they are at your house.

Also, tipping taxi drivers is a scam. The way it was explained to me is that the driver pays the cab owner a set amount per week, then all the fares collected belong to the driver. Out of those, he has to cover gas, washer fluid etc... So tipping someone who is already getting all the money you give them is pointless.

Wow not flushing seems to be a big trigger to launch some people into a rage.
